Call the Puyallup, WA Pep Boys, tell them your name is Josh and see if the pump is still there. I wasn't able to go get it. |

Quote: The stamped steel cover is pretty thick material, .125 (1/8th thick) if I remember right.
Very Interesting. This prompted me to go back and look more closely at what I got. I ordered 2 units for engines I am building in the near future, and a couple of spares.........uh, just because everyone knows how often the pumps go bad **dripping sarcasm** The flat cover was also on some of the early factory pumps, until the factory engineers discovered that it is possible for a small amount of water to collect at the lowest point in the pump, that place is in the pump's impeller cavity, against the flat cover's inner surface. If that water freezes, the impeller jams and breaks the pump's drive gears. The cast cover with the "bumps" allow for a small amount of water to settle outside the impeller cavity. The bump openings also helps the oil flow into and out of the impeller cavity a bit better. DD Anyhow Everything in a "Clevite" box is marked made in USA, and has the flat stamped steel cover 1 unit was in a "Sealed Power" box, no markings on where it was made, and has the cast cover with the humps in it. Also 1 unit was in a generic white box, no "made in" markings, Just a P66-C sticker on it. Again with the cast, humped cover. From what Doc says, guess I'll be using the cast covers first! CE |

turns out one of the oil passages is larger in the pump with the cast cover. Check it out. and obviously some other casting differences. CE |

Anyone know if any other parts stores are having the same clearance on the M66C pump? Partsamerica.com has thm listed for $109.99. It seems that the price jumped up about 20 bucks since the last time I checked on slant oil pumps (about 2 weeks ago). |

Post subject: | More on Oil Pumps... |
Wow... all I can say is: "Thanks Charrlie... I owe you a dinner"... I just received my order of pumps... what a killer deal! Picked-up 3 big boxes of oil pumps from my local Pep Boys... I was shocked to see that the warehouse used UPS to ship over 100 lbs of oil pumps, in 3 seperate boxes, to my local store. The shipping had to have cost more then what I paid for the pumps. ($2.40 each) Looking at the boxes, some of these pumps have been sitting around for a long time. This is a good example of all the "re-boxing" that gets done in the parts business these days, the pumps in my order came in Seal Power, Melling and Dynagear boxes and the pumps are both Melling and Dynagear produced. As an FYI, there is a lot of info. about the SL6 oil pump in this article: http://www.slantsix.org/articles/oil-pu ... report.htm I need some time to "pick through" my lot, I will do that over the next week or so... as I pull the drive gear off each pump. So here is the plan... Keep an eye out for a post about doing a "group buy" oil pump drive gear heat treating run. If you purchased some of these Pep Boys "fire sale" pumps or if you have some other pumps around, pull off the drive gears. I will talk to my local heat treater about case hardening another lot of oil pump drive gears in the near future. If someone wants to help me by acting as the 'distributor', to collect and then re-distribute (mail) all the case hardened gears... I will make it worth their time. Drop me a PM. DD |

Use an oil pump drive gear puller... For pumps without a gear keyway and key, you can remove the cover and then "hammer" the impeller shaft through / out of the gear and pump body. Pumps with a keyed gear, need the special puller. DD |

Digger, these pumps won't work on your RHD Australian Valiant. The RHD cars use a different pump, without a filter mounting pad (has female inlet and outlet threads for pipeworks to and from the remote-mounted filter), so there's room for the steering box. Our LHD pumps have a filter mounting pad integrally cast into the pump body and the filter screws right onto it. |

It's, um, kinda hard to case-harden the nylon distributor pinions. They tend to melt rather than harden. |
