I spent some time on the phone today with Exeter Auto Supply's owner, Dan Marvin. He had been busy playing catch up with the holiday weekend and had not checked his email. I told him about our idea of a group buy, and he was very positive. He talked of his norm of giving car clubs a 5% discount. But when he heard we had 20+ people possibly interested in valve covers, he told me he could go 10% off of jobber. That being said, he quoted me a regular list price for part # 5284 (valve cover) at $158.99. WIth discount, the price (as long as 15-20 people buy) would be $144. His list price is probably the lowest I have encountered. So far so good.

Intakes: If he had that kind of response for intake manifolds, he said it would be a no-brainer. But, if it was just four of these and five of those, then it might not be so easy.

Anyways, he is going to review my email and respond. I invited him to check out the website. I was honest with him in saying we were looking for the best deal available. I even mentioned some of the other vendors that we were courting. We talked about a lot: lead time, full runs, the volatile price of aluminum, linkage problems with the 4 bbl intake, international shipping (not a problem), etc. Dan seemed very positive and did his best to explain his end and where he is coming from. When I mentioned the Erson deal being open ended, he didn't think this would work for him as he is not the manufacturer and aluminum prices being kind of crazy.

All in all, I think this is a great start. Even if this group buy does not work out, at least we will all know who has the lowest available list price. Haven't heard from Pharmboy yet, but I'm sure he will let us know what is going on with AAA Marine. Please let me know what you guys think. Again, thanks for your interest and help - let's cross our fingers!

Meh, that's a bit higher than I was hoping for, but I really want one of these valve covers, so if that's as good as it's gonna get I'll still be in. If for nothing else it's a good thing for the club and I want to help out. Keep us posted.

It sounds like the intake thing might not be such a big discount, but I am still hopeful. Any word on the 5041 w/linkage?

That is what I was going to do to Offy's duel single. A couple small progressive webers and some machining.
PM me with your ideas and maybe I will change my mind on modifying Offy's intake.

When my 5041 intake gets here, I plan on cutting the mounting pads for the 2bbl openings(big step-drill from Harbor Freight), and then drilling/tapping for new carb studs on each pad. A linkage kit from Langdon's Stovebolt to make it all work, and topping it off with a nice oval air cleaner from ebag. I'll be sure to get pictures up as soon as the intake gets in, maybe even try and get a how to series.

I just got off the phone with AAA Marine and learned quite a bit. Namely, Offenhauser does NOT stock the valve cover for the slant six. They only do a production run when they get orders for 25 of them, which is the minimum for the foundry to actually run a lot for them. AAA says they deal frequently with Offy, so there's a good chance a deal can be made, but he said the likely price-break point would be 25 units of the valve cover. He'll be talking with Mr. Offenhauser later today, and I should have a definitive answer for you guys.

I saw the thread on this at the forabodiesonly site and thought it was a great idea for my street engine. I'm still working on my EFI Turbo engine but I think I am going to put that into a race-only car or front engine rail.

The intake should be here in about four days or so...then I'll get right on things...I was thinking about even adding a couple extra holes for nitrous spraybars...just in case I ever wanted to add such a thing...I'll keep you posted...matter of fact, today at lunch I'm off to buy a tube bender, tube cutter, double-flare kit and a tap/die set at Harbor Freight...the greatest store known to man!...to man!...man!...

First, many thanks for excelling at a tough task. Slanters are a pretty sensible group so you likely won't have fools saying something like a guy did on a group thing I did on another marque...in essence we were getting chrysler and he asked if the supplier would mind getting one datsun for him instead.

I think $144 is cool, so is $158 for that matter. In fact $100 would be cooler but not likely. On the other hand, $175 is not cool, for a working range. Put me down for one stiil.

I might be interested in a valve cover...if for nothing else to get the quantity up so that everyone can get a better discount.

$158 doesn't impress me much. $144 is getting better. If we got it down to $130, then I would probably bite.

This cover looks nice, and I know that Offenhauser is good quality. But, I have always passed on this valve cover because it only has the breather/fill hole, so you have to modify it right out of the box if you want the PCV (or draft tube in my case).

Also, for those of you looking at intakes, I waited 3 months for my 2x1. Ordered it through Howell. Price was right, but they had to wait for Offy to do a production run.
