The transfer slot on the primary should be masked. You might see just the hint of it, but nothing more.Did you note how far the secondary idle screw had to be moved from where it was originally? Did it need to be opened slightly, tighter? Or was it open more than the adjustment that I outlined?

the primary slot is now shut off

the secondary is also closed off and it was sitting under where you described - so I have adjusted it so that it touched the plate and very slightly moved it - then turned it in 1/4 turn plus a tiny bit more and after a couple of open and closes - it is still completely covering the slot there also

Put it together and see how things go.

If you get it idling, look down the carb and make sure the shooter isn't dripping fuel into the venturi. The fuel at idle should be coming from the idle circuit; the small hole where the idle mixture screw is.

The purpose of the transfer slots is to carry the mixture over as more air is introduced beyond the idle circuit, but before enough signal is available to get the main circuit, (The Jet), pulling fuel. It transfers between idle and main circuit. The pump shot provides further enrichment for when the throttle is opened quickly.

The main circuit of a carburetor is the main jet. The primary stage and secondary stage each have a main circuit. (Terminology 101)

Hopefully your on the road to getting this thing going again! :D

OK here's what I've found

If I hold the throttle down so that it opens the primary I can get it to run

If I let up it shuts down immediately

I also found out that while it's running and I try to give it fuel - as soon as the secondary opens it dies out

also, it's too damn cold and windy now for me to screw with it more than a few minutes at a time.

How far do you have to hold the primary open for it to stay running? Could be you need to up your curb idle speed and/or richen up the curb idle mixture.

seems like a lot - 1/4"+

I can't adjust it in any further it's got the spring already tight and it's not staying running

Advance your timing a bit. Does your choke work?

Make sure the mixture screws are turned out at least 1-1/4 turns.

Oh poop. You don't have a choke. We need to get that fixed.
When you open the throttle looking down at the carb, are you getting a pump shot at the shooter?

I should have looked at the pics on page two a bit earlier.. You really need a working choke on that thing.

Did you get the choke vacuum port plugged as Reed pointed out?

Yep, give it at minimum 10° of ignition advance. It should start fine with more than that. Just back it off if it starts detonating.
