Kenny J got the bed off, got down to Morresville today, to do some checking on the fuel tank..

1) when buying gas,, if you left the pump on, the auto kick off when the tank was full,, it did not,, gas would over flow from the top of the fuel tank,,gallons at a time.. once the bed was off,, found that the 3 inch diameter nut that should hold the fuel level sender tight,, was not,, has about a 1/4 inch up and down play..
2) found the grommet to the tank inlet severely cracked, another leak point

the gas gauge always read full for the first couple hundred miles,, then as the gas was used, would move to MT fast,, I'll check that out to

checked the lines from the tank to the engine compartment by blowing compressed air through them. The fuel pick up and fuel return were fine, no back pressure. The vent line that runs ( I think) to the charcoal canister is fully stopped up. No air goes through. Also found the charcoal canister leaks charcoal at that fitting (right hand side fitting). Thinking the charcoal cannot get far into the tube,, will section at the first bend and see what I find..

other than that body work progressing

stopped by Ed's Machine shop,,he is finishing the machine work on the case..

regards

Nice splice on the cab! What a project! Dad hands it down. Grandsons drive it to and from college. Son stores and restores. Doesn't get much better - family treasure!

finishing up some detail work on the instrument panel
I want to use a gauge cluster from a 1990 D-150,, has better graphics, 100MPH speedo, volt meter...from a mounting standpoint, it is a 100% bolt in. There are some difference in the gauge wiring..

http://www.flickr.com/photos/13718356@N ... 285495775/

The 1990 speedo does not use a cable, it is driven electronically by a VSS,,got that working, will make adding cruse control easier.

In doing bench testing to verify the wiring I did not expect to find that the 1990 gas gauge was not responding properly with the OE 1983 fuel level sender. It did not read full scale.
Found that the fuel level sender on the 83 runs with 76 ohms empty, and 8 ohms full. The 90 runs 120 ohms empty and 4 ohms full..

Grabbed a couple of the new style fuel level sending units from the local pull a part, one from a 94 Dakota & one from a 92 D-150,,,seeing that the 90 style fuel level sender also contains a low pressure electric pump,,,and is pre wired for a low fuel warning light,,
going to see if I can put a 1992 long bed fuel tank under my 83 short bed.
The fuel inlet pipes that run from the body to the tank are near identical,
so this may work,, I'll run the stuff down to Kenney's while the bed is off and check it out.

regards
DT

thanks,so the larger tank should go in,,
on the charcoal canister,,
when disassembling the truck I notice that the fitting on the charcoal canister that hooked to the vent line that ran to the fuel tank,, would leak charcoal if the canister was tipped, the can fitting that ran to the carb bowl did not leak charcoal..

checked the vent line that runs to the tank,, yep was plugged,, may explain why, if the gas tank was completely filled,, the engine would sometimes momentarily cut out for the first 50 miles or so.. starting from the charcoal can, about 3 feet in is where the line made its first significant bend, cut it there, from there back to the tank the vent line was open...

I got the charcoal can off the 92,, I'm hoping that Chrysler improved the reliability of those parts over the 9 years from 83 to 92,I'll put a clear filter on it and find out!

DT

Update on the D-150 project.. :D
pulled the cab from the frame @ Kenny's shop,,, Kenny has connections at a sand blasting business,
that is where I was today,, some interesting vehicles came into the yard ,, watch for the photo of the 1949 ford F5,,
they did a great job on the D-150 frame..Also got the cyl head back,, there is a photo of that also...

Nice! Just don't go for a swim in the river while you're waiting for the job to be complete!

Very cool! 8)

No issues with flat towing it with no weight on the front? The front tires didn't want to go full lock to one side or the other in corners?

The one time I flat towed a '64 Valiant convertible with no engine/tranny it went full lock in a corner and caused some pretty serious "pucker factor" for a minute or two.

You're on my list of "folks to emulate" when it comes to projects.

fortunately the blast shop was about 5 miles from Kenny's..kind of an ez drive on back country roads..

as long as I could make wide sweeping turns the front end of the D-150 tracked fine,, on the way out and on the way back there was a sharp turn,, from that the front wheels did not want to straighten up,, had to stop, kick the tires straight...

about finished the motor assembly for the 83 D-150.
here are some shots of the heavy cast crank and heavy damper, garage built windage tray...

http://www.flickr.com/photos/13718356@N ... 686484586/

plan is to rebuild the front end, install gas lines /tank and frame mounted wiring,
set the motor and tranny in place, would like to have that done by the end of May,, then drag all that back down to Kennys to set the cab and bed back on so he can do the painting..
