Looks like I'll be getting my hands on the factory 2-piece style heat shield, courtesy Bruce! Dan, any info you can give on the 2-piece vs the 1-piece heat shields? Is either preferred over the other? Bruce told me the heat shield is aluminium with some kind of heat insulation that is peeling off it, I wasn't away of any insulation. If I were to make one from this template from aluminium (without the heat insulation stuff) should the shield be thicker? |

I am not aware of any 1-piece factory heat shield. All the ones I've ever seen, either in parts catalogues or on cars, have been the 2-piece variety and as far as I know (knew?) that is the only factory type. Please take photos (at least!) of the shield you receive. Me, I would make a new shield out of stiff but flexible insulating boardlike material (i.e., gasket board) about 3/32" thick, like the factory item. |

Interesting, Dan. The shield was described to me as aluminum with insulation board that is curling. So would you use a sheet of aluminum with some gasket board glued to the underside or just use the gasket board stuff? |

Dan please refer back to the photos I posted of my heat shield. It's a factory one piece item. It was made of a fiberboard material with a tin foil like coating on the bottom.

This one piece shield is the same type that I removed from my 60,000 mile '77 Aspen many years ago. I did not keep it because it was broken. |

Folks, Update..... I finally made a full size plot of the.pdf from Steve who converted the photo Jeb posted at the beginning of this thread. I am trying to reverse engineer the stock factory shape. After I square up the edges, I will make one using sheet aluminum and test it out. It should provide a lot more protection compared to my existing heat shield. My current heat shield works great with a stock aluminum manifold but not so good with the stock cast iron manifold......the iron is slow to warm up and just holds the heat much longer for massive heat soak during the hot weather. |

 Ted- if you get a good PDF version done, I would be interested in a copy. If you actually start making these, I would also be very interested in one for a two barrel and one for a one barrel. Mostly the one barrel at this point for my brother's Duster. |

Reed, Will do...however the next few weeks I am very busy with work at Boeing. It may be a month or so. I need to pull the manifolds off my engine before the bad weather sets in and replace the stock steel intake gasket......it leaks like a sieve and sounds bad! I want to install the new heat shield at that time. I will make a aluminum template to share with you and install a aluminum prototype. |

As soon as I get the heat shield from Bruce I'll plop it on the scanner and get a nice scan of it complete with measurements. Also talking to a few machinists currently to see if I can get one of them to do a small run to us. |

I know aluminum is a popular material for a heat shield like this, but I'm not sure it is the best pick. Aluminum is metal. It conducts heat. Yes, it will baffle some of the heat away, but it's still conductive and will still heat up and transmit that heat upward to the carburetor. Why not picking something that doesn't conduct heat? An insulating material? For that matter, why not really going for it with a thick heat shield made of fibre-filled phenolic, like this what's in the photos? Not this thick, because then we are having hood clearance problems. But 1/4" or 5/16" thick, I think, would be ideal and allow the use of two thin '62-'69 carb base gaskets (one above, one below), providing really excellent insulation to keep the heat from reaching the carburetor, without screwing up hood clearance or linkage geometry. And that material is fully machinable.
