Bill, I first got on-line in 1995 when I bought a 14.4k modem at Office Max in Mountain View, CA for the Packard Bell Legend 386 I bought off a friend. That computer had an 80 MB hard drive which I replaced with a 425 MB Maxtor which only cost me $159. I did AOL for a while and then Netcom. I think I may have tried CompuServe briefly, but it could as easily have been Prodigy, but an AOL forum is more likely. OK, to get back on track. If I were used turbo shopping for a 225 I would get a Holset HY35W off a 2001-2002 Dodge Cummins with an automatic. You'll have to rig up a spring to help the wastegate open sooner as 23 psi is a recipe for disaster. The HX35W should also do well if the exhaust manifold were split to take advantage of the divided turbine housing. Something else about intercoolers that I forgot. Reducing combustion temperatures reduces oxides of nitrogen or NOX. |

Josh, I got onto Prodigy in about 1992 or '93 when I bought a used computer (can't recall what kind) from my brother-in-law. I was never on AOL or Comp-U-Serv, just Prodigy, prior to the genesis of the Internet. I was the Moderator of the Drag Racing BB on Prodigy while there was one. But, my paternal grandmother's last name was "Skinner" (second marriage,) so naturally, I remembered your name when I saw it. I think we had some friendly exchanges, somewhere, but they could have been on the MML, if you were ever on that forum. At any rate, it was a while back... a long while. ![]() I lived in Hayward (CA) from 1980 'til 2004 (production dept. at the SF Chronicle) so, we might have been "neighbors." There are only 9 million people in the Bay area, so, what are the odds??? LOL! At any rate, our car (a '64 Valiant 4-door) turbo'd slant six car is nearing completion, needing only finishing up the fuel system, and some wiring, to be ready to race. Send a blank email to my Billdedman@Hotmail.com address, and I'll be happy to send you some pictures of it, if you have any interest in it. That goes for anyone here who has any interest in what I have been doing for the past 3 years. Mechanically, it's a close copy of what Tom Wolfe and Ryan Peterson have done with their engines. Same rods, pistons, etc... Hopefully, I'll be able to run within a second of their cars... those guys are F.A.S.T.!!!! I am an old guy, and have no interest in trying to conquer the learning curve I'd have to negotiate in order to access knowledge of the vagaries of an EFI system, so it's gonna be a blow-thru Holley carb deal. My partner in this is even older than ~I~ am, so we're stuck with a carb for the foreseeable future. Those two motors (Tom's and Ryan's) both seem happy with boost levels in the high twenties. You comment, "23 psi is a recipe for disaster." makes me wonder... I REALLY want 500 HP out of this thing. I don't think I can get it at 20 pounds of boost... What are your thoughts on that? Thanks for any information. Bill in Conway, AR |

I have a diaphragm WG. Took it apart this morning and could not find anything wrong, EXCEPT for a hole I should have plugged in the actuator?? So reassembled and will test soon. Tilley made 630 HP on race gas and 22 psi, but said the power was almost the same down to 17-18 psi. Cooler charge should also mean more power due to more dense air. Lou |

Lou, do you know what turbo Tilley have? |

He did not tell me, or maybe even know, exactly. It is a T4 frame, and he said he just kept testing then sending it back to a local turbo expert and getting it made bigger. He said it is way bigger than what anyone says should run well on a 3.8L engine. I have a T60-1 (T4 turbine) on my '68 Dart and it is on the big side for a street car, but will probably make all the power I'll ever be interested in (500-600 HP?). Lou |

Was that 630hp from wheels or crank? Have you seen his dynosheet, what rpm did it spool? Ilpos HX50 spooled at about 3500rpm and he dynoed 650hp@22psi from crank iirc. What rpm does T60 spool? |

630 @ crank on engine dyno. Over 500 RWHP on chassis dyno, but can't remember. IIRC, peak HP was 4900 RPM and spooled up around 2500? My T60-1 spools up in the 2500-3000 range. I have stupidly been leaving leaks in the system, and I'm not so sure about my WG operation, so that RPM may go down. Lou |

The big diesels had a plate on the end of the intake that was spring loaded. It clanked mighty loud when the big motor "burped!" When I was driving an 81 Mack it had an intercooler. It lowered the intake charge to 140* Denser air and more boost. |
