I need a set ASAP so I'm most certainly in for that. I would much rather spend the cash for stronger studs than drilling larger holes for the 1/2 studs, time is money!!! Lol

For cast iron you would actually use a .460 drill bit and use a roll form tap to get a much stronger thread than a regular cut style tap will give you. So all the pre-existing threads will be removed from the 7/16" threads.

I talked with my machinist today and he confirmed my thoughts that machining to 1/2" would be more expensive than the stronger studs. I will be ordering studs in the next couple of days so I need a count as to who still wants a set or two. If we get 6 sets the price will be about $265 per set. If we can get 8 sets the price drops to about $235 per set. Right now I have Kev and Seymour and myself for a total of 4 sets. Anyone else?

I thought forming taps were a no-no for cast iron (or any other material that chips when machining). I was going to suggest this when I recalled this.

No, form taps are used quite often in the industry, and almost a requirement especially when tapping blind holes where you don't want chips falling into the holes and possibly having the tap bury up in the chips inside the holes. I use them in titanium and stainless and other exotic materials that have those tendencies. Form taps also create a stronger thread, much like a rolled formed thread does as in the process ARP uses to make their threads on bolts and studs. It doesn't create the stress risers either like a cutting tap or die does, so its better all the way around.

I believe you, it just contradicts what I read. Maybe chips was the wrong word. Quoting this article,

Perhaps not all cast iron is made the same.

It will also raise some material above the deck surface so the block would have to be decked after tapping, right? Unless the hole was beveled / countersunk before hand. As was pointed out though regardless of process if a shop's doing it, the cost will be more then the stronger studs.

Yeah, there are different grades of all metals and maybe some react better to some processes than others. But using a form tap in this instance is an option if anyone was concerned with the previous threads not cleaning up fully when upsizing to the larger 1/2" from 7/16" bolts. I've used them in many blocks i've converted to 4 bolt main which is a blind hole and on others i've upsized to larger head bolt sizes with no issues.

I only have orders for 4 sets. We need 6 sets to make this work otherwise I am going to spend the extra money to have 1/2" studs put in. I would prefer to use the 7/16 studs but, I am not willing to spend an extra $520 for studs that I probably will never use. Last call, anyone else for 7/16 studs.

Another option is to contact the nearest ARP wholesale distributor closest to you, ARP and other vendors protect their dealer network and even though you may think you are making a sizeable purchase dealing direct, they never undercut what a dealer can purchase their products for to protect them. So, you may want to contact a dealer since they have a louder voice than the guy off the street has, and you may end up buying the studs for an even cheaper price than buying direct. Or you may get the cheaper price with a lesser quantity. Just a thought!

I called my local speed shop today to ask my guy Bobby if he can beat them up a bit on the price for me. He told me to try and get a part number for the bolt kit and he will see what he can do. Anyone have a part number for this 220,000 set? I'll try and get a part number out of ARP tomorrow if not.

I don't know if they have a part number for the 220k set. They are a custom order. They priced a 7/16 x 5 1/4 stud 75pcs 100pcs and 225pcs. They will do a smaller quantity but the price goes up 3 to 4 dollars each pc.

Kev are you willing to spend over $300 for a set? I might go for 1 set instead of 2 as I really don't need 2 sets, I just wanted to try to get up to 6 sets for the price break for all of us.
