Right...starter! My bad, what was I thinking... OK, does anyone know if torque converters can be out of balance? Like, do the vanes inside break loose or anything? Anything else in the tranny that could make this vibration with car not moving? B |

Yep, but I wasn't completely caught off guard. Given all that has happened, I was (half) expecting this vibration to still be there. This vibration started after my head gasket blew in the last engine, before that it was smooth as can be, never had a hint of vibration. Recall, after the head gasket episode the tranny was cock-eyed (I later found) and the rear bushing in the tranny was torn up. I straightened out the tranny/mount, replaced the bushing, still the vibration was there. I also replaced the drive shaft, since the yoke shaft was sticking out further than it should (though in retrospect the vibration was not the drive shaft either). I'm thinking there was some other damage somewhere - must be in the tranny? As for the engine, I started from the inside out, the crank was checked, fixed, balanced. So it's not that. I have new (different, reconditioned) rods, new pistons, rods all the same weight and pistons all the same weight, matched set. This suggests to me that it's not the engine internals. The engine needed a rebuild anyhow, the rear main bearing was destroyed and I had to check the innards to make sure they were OK. Since there was damage to the tranny at the tail shaft, perhaps I damaged my torque converter or pump or something? Where would you guys look next? Swap out the torque converter? Brian |

Did you by any chance use a poly trans mount? I put one in my Duster when it was a street car and it would almost shake the windshield out. Put a rubber one back in and no more issue. Yes, a converter can most definitely get out of balance. Unusual, but it can happen. |

The vibration was occurring with a rubber tranny mount. I did replace it with a poly mount, but there is no difference in the vibration. I also replaced the engine mounts with poly (pretty soft). Also, Reed suggested installing the tranny brace; the vibration was there with it on, before this rebuild (also, I actually drove my car for a couple years without a brace, not knowing that I needed one, no vibration). When the head gasket blew (burned through between two cylinders) the engine was rocking and jerking pretty badly. The motor mounts were torn up and the tranny mount had slipped off the rubber, sideways about 1/2". So there were some pretty strong forces at work. I suppose I could start with pulling the tranny and having it checked out. It was rebuilt a few years back, shifts good, but perhaps something is bent or whatever. Rather than replacing things piecemeal, I'll just pull it out and have it checked over. One step at a time. Brian |
