I'm guessing the 600+ miles of 60+ mph driving along with a damn oil leak that kept allowing it to start heating up. I would stop and add more oil about every 100 miles - I needed to stop and take a break anyway...

I am hoping the head did not warp for sure!
Might get lucky...

Whatever head lifting there is would be mostly by me - and I am disabled with a bad back...

Actually, you may not be that bad off. You obviously have good capentry skills. I recommend you build a small gantry crane to go over the engine and use it to lift the head and manifolds as an assembly. You should be able to build this cheaply out of 2x4s and use a come-along or deadfall, or even a simple double purchase rope pulley to lift the head and manifold assemblies. Just be sure you have something to tie the assembly off to.

Did you spray the engine with water while hot? Maybe cracked or warped the head?

67 - it was warm but not hot - only drove it about 3 miles to the car wash and it had set for almost an hour before I had run it earlier...

Reed - that is exactly the type of thing I have been thinking about! LOL
The last time I did this I had the help of my boys - even though it was what? 9 years ago? They still were able to help and I did keep them together - it's one of those memories that all of a sudden come back - I thought I would never have to deal with crap like this again so tossed it away! LOL

It is just the little stuff - all the bending and kneeling and leaning over to do - etc. it frickin adds up so damn quick with me, that I only have short periods of time that I can stand to work on stuff - or more $#!+ gets broke because of me being in pain and mad...

What is the cost of head - intake and exhaust gaskets now days anyway???

and the exhaust/intake set for $12.99

Good?
Reasonable?

Also rent a torque wrench for $92.99 with full refund when you return it!

Didn't mean to get you all in a tizzy; I've power washed many engines with more than 5 minutes of driving on them with no problem. i've only seen an engine part crack once from water, it was when my brother dumped a bucket of water on his way overheated 350 chevy engine in an attempt to cool it down.

If you hadn't reported the compression readings, I was still betting on water in the gas or electrical system.

It seems more likely that you blew a head gasket.

Yea, that was not even a thought on my radar - and still do not think that could have happened. But, with my luck anything is possible! LOL

I am going to have it towed over to a guys shop and have him take a look and give me a bid on what he will charge to do it for me. He sounds like a very knowledgeable and fair businessman and my sister has always found him to be honest, fair and does professional work.

Hoping against all hopes that I can afford to get it done by him so I do not have to do it. This way I am sure it is all together and working properly when I head back north on my 600 mile journey home...

I am going to take the rest of the doghouse out and the drivers seat out too so there is only the motor sitting in the front along with the front and the back of the doghouse. No reason to spend his time and my money(his expensive money!), on stuff that I can take care of.

Hopefully it will not be a week long project either...
I tried to let him know the importance of the rig - as it is all I have and it is not a hobby rig like a lot of his classic car customers may have!

Guess only time and a tow truck will help me know better...

And when I get around to it, I will upload the pics I took of the cars he is working on right now!!!

I told him I felt embarrassed for him to have my rig on his property!!!
He laughed and said no way - he loved the old sled!

BUT - OMG He had a woody up on the rack doing an alignment and the frickin thing glowed!!! Abso-frickin-lutely BEAUTIFUL!!!!

Had to walk past a custom Chevy ?Nomad? - I think it was a 2 door even!!!
Talk about cherry rigs in his yard!

Two burned valves...
Says it was probably the gas down here and the crap they put in it now for pollution control.
Thinks my van having been rebuilt 13 years ago the new stuff was not available for the head.

$1600.00 to rebuild it...

That's approaching the cost of a rebuilt long block, e.g. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dodge-Chrysler- ... 1934190915

Still you'd have to pay for labor to install it, break it in, but you'd have a new engine....

You only need a head replaced, or a valve job on the existing one. I suppose the labor time is the kicker.

Hey, did he pull the head to determine that? Wouldn't a burned through head gasket between #5 and #6 do the same thing in a leak down test?

1200 is an ouch, maybe someone local can swap you a cylinder head. On the other hand, if you are stuck,, it is not likely that you would find reliable transportation for the 12 big ones
