Progress of sorts. Interior instead of engine, but at this point I'll take what I can get.

Really nice! Looks roomy without all the “stuff”.

Yeah, I haven't really permanently installed the carpet and panels yet, or the seats. Just have to trim the carpet, put the door panel clips in and bolt the steering column in. I am anxious to finish and drive the thing.

OK, as far as racing at the Motor Mile race (in Fairlawn VA) goes, my friend Scott has a slant from a Duster that he is going to bring up. We'll drop that in the Belvedere and go racing. It might be Sunday only, but we will be trying for both Saturday and Sunday.
At least I can iron out some simple stuff and get some laps in on the car.
It's progress of sorts anyway.

Sounds like a plan. Looking forward to seeing you all over on this side of VA...

Slant on,

Nice, I really like this project but might be a little biased since dad has a '65 Satellite

Are you using stock bore pistons? Do the larger valves clear the cylinder bores ok? How much was taken off the block and head for 11:1 compression??

Stock bore on a 79 cast crank engine. 1.74 intake/1.44 exhaust (clears the stock bore). This head was shaved about .120 and the block decked .090. this gives a static compression of 11.2 using a steel head gasket. I have a head with larger valves, but that will wait for a large bore engine (if I can find pistons).
Project has stalled due to family issues, but I am getting it back on track (albeit, much slower than anticipated). For now, I have to be content with the exploits of my fellow slant racers.
I am currently rebuilding the entire front suspension/brakes. I am sticking with OEM components (no poly bushings).
Rear suspension has been completely redone, but I am going to replace the rear wheel cylinders with some slightly smaller diameter ones (3/4") for better brake proportioning.
I am really anxious to get the chassis and drivetrain completed so that I can get some runs on this thing.

Sounds like a great combo! Looking forward to seeing more of it.

Let's see....3 years,3 ruined heads, 3 different camshafts, probably more.
I am hoping 3rd time is the charm.
Engine is (finally) sealed up and waiting to be dropped in. I may rig up a test stand to break it in first.
This goal has turned out to be almost as elusive as that aluminum head thingie.

Cool! Dang, screw the test stand. Bolt that sucker in and fire it up!

Nice work! If that engine runs half as good as it looks they’ll never catch you!

why the additional thermo bypass?
the head heater out to the water pump...

I am thinking you are just delaying warming up the block...
just buzzing coolant around the front of the head...

It isn't really a bypass hose. It is actually a heater bypass. I have had bad experiences with those rubber hose caps rupturing. The aluminum water pump outlet seemed a little thin to tap for a plug. I figure with this setup, I can easily swap out the water pump without worrying about capping the heater fitting. This is simple and effective, requiring no mods and I don't worry if the thing will burst on me. The hose is a DayCo 87617. It is preformed and looks like it was made for this application.
