still considering floating pins? really like the idea of boing able to swap a damaged piston without pressing it. |

My contact will talk with the engineers about this. He is opposed to a floating pin for longevity/durability, and I do not see why you cannot just get the damaged piston (pin) pressed off and a new one pressed on. I don't care either way, but he does, and he's buying most of the pistons and doing the leg work. So, I will not press him (haha) too much more on this, but I will ask again. Lou |

That doesn't make any sense to me. I don't know about today's engines, but in the "old" days, even the factory high performance engines used floating pins. And I think most all aftermarket performance pistons use floating pins. I believe the OEM non performance engine did not use floating pins, due to the added expense of machining, and assembly cost. A good example of this is the "Mopar" 2.2 engine. Non turbo engine used pressed pins, and the turbo engine used floating pins.Lou Since these pistons are "custom" the only difference between floating pin and non floating pins is the lock ring grooves in the piston pin bore. If the grooves are in the piston, they can be installed either pressed or floated. The difference is in the rod. Most any rod can be set up for floating pins. Just putting my 2 cents out there. I am not in a position to purchase any of these. |

I suspect they are trying to keep the weight down on a slug that's fairly tall for it's bore size, using a shorter lightweight pin w/o the need for retaining clips will keep the pin-boss section of the piston narrower & lighter. JMO.Lou Durability for floating pins seems like a non-issue to Me, like anything else done right. If a pin were to sieze in a rod, it would simply perform as a press-fit, and proper grooves & clips have won how many 24hr. races over the decades? Lol... Thanks for the update, I'll be looking forward to the next one! |

This is my first reply to a post, however I have been searching this forum for several years, great info! I am very much interested in a set of forged pistons. Building a 170 and obviously cant do the weisco long rod set up. Any idea on ball park cost? |

Thanks for your interest! Cost was on the first post of the thread - around $500 for the set. The last update I got was that there was a delay working with the Icon piston folks, but my contact is still working on it. I'll let you all know as soon as I know anything! Slant on, Lou |

If it's not too late to get on the confirmed list, I'd like to buy a set. |

Post subject: | UPDATE - 11/25/23 - forged pistons/pins - group buy |
Dear Slanters, I just got an update from our contact with Icon pistons. He has a 3D printed "proof" and says all looks good. These pistons WILL have floating pins and forced pin oiling. We want to order in late November or December. Here is my updated list. PLEASE CONFIRM OR TELL ME OTHERWISE ASAP. You can PM me or text me or reply to this thread. I WANT A SET: (Definition - I definitely have money to spend and will guarantee I can pay the money when the pistons are made. I am prepared to pay a deposit to Lou at the point we make the order.) 1) Lou 2) Greg 3) Valleyant 4) Matt (Badvert65) 5) Vitamindart 6) Wayne 7) CJ 8 ) Curmudgeon 9) rich_mc 10) 66dirtydart (need confirmation + deposit) 11) 63 Plymouth (need confirmation + deposit) I might want a set but am fine with losing out forever if I do not get on this soon: 1) Stan 2) Strokerscamp 3) Terry Littlejohn 4) Andrew (out) 5) Killer6 (out) Thanks! Just to confirm.. 3.485" Bore, and with the floating piston pins. Would the 225 Stock rod need to be modified for the floating pins? I would think so, but I would like to know what would need to be done to the rod to make them work with the piston and pin package. Thanks, Greg |

You have 2 choices Greg. 1. Have the rods bored out and bronze bushings intalled. 2. Have the small ends honed so the pins float steel on steel. Mike used to do #2. Either way will work. |
