I spent the day in the garage, and made some good progress on the new engine. I checked my valve notches and did my calculations one last time. Then I loaded the head up and dropped it at the machine shop. I am having it cut .025 which I think was 10.82 CR and 8.72 Dynamic CR. The head should be done midweek.

After doing all that grinding on the pistons in the block, I had a lot of stuff to clean up. I wiped everything off as good as I could, then washed it all down again. Removed the pistons and rods and gave them a good cleaning and also worked on my valve notches with some sand paper and took off ay sharp edges. That work (the valve notches) was time consuming but it turned out pretty nice. I did enlarge the notches to be big enough to run a Jeffrey head when that happens. I couldn't see making them just large enough for my Engine builder valves. I'd rather not do that again in a year or two!

Then I began re-assembly. Basically the bottom end is assembled. I got the scraper in and clearanced. I have to wait till my engine comes out of my car to fit the Windage tray because I don't have another 60-66 oil pan. So maybe next weekend I will start the swap. We shall see!

Here are some pics

I drilled an 1/8" hole at each end of the scraper so I could get it in the exact same place in the future.

Only 12 months after going in, my engine is back out and being swapped for the long rod, big bore that I have been building. Really felt kind of weird pulling a almost new engine out!

I took off work tomorrow to work on the swap. 1st thing in the morning I will have my friend weld my cam stop in my front cover and weld the bung in my header for my O2 sensor. Then back to my garage to begin the swaperoo! 1st the pan and pick-up get swapped and the windage tray gets fit checked. Then the pan can be installed for good and the the cylinder head gets its final assembly. Once the head is on then it is time to install it back into the car. Opps! Note to self. Don't forget to put the lifters in before you set the head on the block. (peanut head)

Only took us about 1 1/2 hrs to have this thing out and ready to start swapping parts. try that with a new car!

With Friday and Saturday, I hope to have the engine back in and close to ready to run. One thing I do need is another set of push rods. I'm pretty sure that mine are to short. Not sure why, unless it is because the base circle was ground down on my cam regrind.

Rick

Rick, if you have a windage tray and any baffles in the pan be sure to check that there is adequate clearance to get the dip stick in and to the bottom of the pan. This should be a very strong motor.

I will check that 1st thing in the morning Seymour. I have the bottom end all buttoned up. I did not install the dipstick though. Tomorrow the head goes on and the new water pump and then it is ready to go back into the car.

Checked the dipstick this morning and all is well. Also reinstalled the head with test springs (again) to verify push rod clearance. Pushrod gets closer to the Passenger side as valve opens. Clearance would be OK with stock push rods, and iffy with 3/8" ones. I will clearance the side of the pushrod hole and taper around the top of the hole to aid in oil drain back.

Pictures to follow.

I now have the new engine setting back between the fenders. Just as I was about ready to start the install part of the project, Ryan showed up to be another set of hands. It dropped in like a piece of cake. Now I just need to accessorize it and see if it will start. I would have had a lot more done except for I went ahead and clearanced the push rod holes. That makes a big mess that needs to be cleaned up before the head can be re-assembled. Plus about half way through the drive in my electric die grinder started slipping. Actually something broke inside and any time you put any pressure on it it slipped pretty bad. So that slowed my morning down.

I did check my valve to piston clearance again with test springs on number 1 cylinder and I had over .150 clearance. So, we should be good to go

Here are some pictures of the progress.

Look Mom, No Motor!!

New timing cover with stop and O2 sensor on my header

Push rods are pretty close to the head, and they are only 5/16"

Image
Worked on them with my die grinder and should have plenty of room.

Finally assembled and ready to go.

One of the last Cox brothers intake gaskets we have.

Rick, i've got the copper ones coming, they unfortunately are going to miss the date I requested them to be ready for. But they are now going to be another option.

Engine is back in and almost ready to fire up. One question. I have a new O2 sensor, but the gauge is not wired up or installed. Will it hurt to have the sensor in my header without being hooked up. Don't want to ruin my sensor.

Take the sensor out if you dont have power to it.. Some of them will be ruined without power to the 02 sensor Heater...

Also some have a calibration process before use. read you manual carefully.

I know you have readin glasses somewhere.. I saw you with them before :-)

I don't think it will hurt it, just will not have anything to register on. It will put out voltage to nothing.

A old spark plug will fill the void if you remove it.
