Is that one of those experimental 6 speed transmissions in the car? |

I’m told it’s the 3 speed. I don’t know about the mounting position, but I have seen the shifter style before. I believe it’s a Toad only version designed to clear the bench seat. The shifter will stay! Whether we use a 4…5…6 speed or an automatic, we’ll fabricate it to work. |

Isn't that shifter called the Twisted Snake or some such thing? I think it's a 1 year only thing. |

I found some information on Curbside Classics that indicate the shifter was in 60-61 Valiants. |

The "charmed snake shifter" was available for '60-'61 Models only. Some additional documentation It appears that all of the 3-speed transmissions for '62 were column shift only, again one of the many subtle changes that were implemented for the 1962 model year. I do not believe the hump would have been implemented until 1964 - because the 3 speeds before that did not have a need for the shifter and rod arrangement like the a833 does. The Charmed Snake Shifter comes with a unique Transmission cross member that mounts the simple shifter to the crossmember itself, then the rods run to the 3 speed levers from there. The shifter comes right through the floor pan from the cross member. It's quite a different setup than the typical '64 and later floor-shifted A bodies that we are used to. I doubt Dan will answer the courtesy phone in this section of the forum, but he does know a lot of these sorts of things. |
