Good luck Charlie. Tentative plans are for my junk to make an appearance Sunday at RT66 for the Wally race. I have in my posession a jet combination good for a 200 shot. |

The question is, "do you have the Balls to use them? Tentative plans are for my junk to make an appearance Sunday at RT66 for the Wally race. I have in my posession a jet combination good for a 200 shot. I just plan on running motor only, Wed. If everthing is ok, maybe just try the nitrous, in high gear, on the last run, to check things out. I am not using the 250 hp plate I bought at the swap meet. I had an old compucar 125 hp plate left over from the early 80's. Will start with that, and see how it goes. |

Probably not Sunday. You only get 2 time runs and then go into class.

I was at the shop today and did a little last minute checking on my system. I found a nitrous leak where the fitting screwed into the solenoid. Turned out to be a bad fitting, luckily I had another in my spare fitting drawer. Perused my jet selection and the NOS chart and stepped it up to a 100 shot. Seems good to go now. Dropped a couple bottles off at High Speed to get them filled. It's gonna fly or die. Weather forecast for the weekend looks like crap. Rain predicted for Saturday and Sunday. If it looks decent, I may swing to 41 Saturday night instead of going to 66 Sunday. |

Went to the track tonight. I waited untill 6:00 pm, for UPS to deliver my new seat belt, so we were running late. Meant to stop for gas, but forgot. Got thru tech fine, and got into the staging lanes, just in time for an oildown. About 1 hour later, First pass, slight bog/hesitation, just off the line. 60 foot----2.134 1/8 mile----9.800 at 68.38 mph 1/4 mile ---15.663 at 81.58 2nd pass misplaced the ticket, will try to find it in the daylight, but was a 15.77 running out of gas before the traps. Track had already closed their pumps, so that was it for the night. Never turned the bottle on. I'm happy with a mid 15, for the first pass on a new car and motor. Valdosta, here I come. |

Ok, the Valdosta race is over. Here is how the car ran. 1st pass 60 foot........ 1.965 1/8..............9.527 mph............69.36 1/4.............15.289 mph............83.85 Made 8 passes, between fri and sat, on motor only fastest to slowest was 15.241 to 15.298 pretty consistant. I couldn't get on the tree, I have a short front tire (no rollout) and was leaving at 3,000 rpm. Had one run where the fan belt came off, doing the burnout, and the car picked up to 15.007 at 85.36. Time for a electric fan and water pump drive (in stock), and an alternator field cutout.. I made one nitrous pass on saturday, but was dissapointed in the results. 60 ft..........1.854 1/8.......... 8.706 mph..........77.26 1/4...........13.928 mph..........91.91 I think it would have been a little quicker. I have a button on my shifter, and pulled the shifter sideways passed the detent, and went from 1st right into 3rd. Really thought it should have picked up more, so didn't try again, till I have time to do some tuning. Need to get on the tree. 7 passes 6 red lights. Sun, I tried staging at 1,100 rpm and that solved the red light problem, but slowed up the RT a little too much( plus the et) . Just need to get some practice, and find the rpm the car likes. The engine is laying over after 5,000 rpm, and I need to see what is causing that. But I think the project is a success. I will do a total price breakdown and post it. |

Congrats on having a consistent car Charlie, that is what wins races. How much hose were you putting to it? Looks like the ET picked up about what you'd expect from a 50 shot. |

With the contraversy on alternator field cutout (that I havn't totaly bought into), maybe a big relay that drops all the big loads except for ignition? Wish I could have gone but just couldn't. |

I had bought that 250 system, but had an old 100-150 plate, from my wife's car in the 80's. So I deceided to use that first (stock pistons and rings). Don't know what the tank pressure was, but did have 6 lbs fuel. most likely a tad rich. |

What contaversy? I have a WOT micro sw on my Cuda, that opens the field circuit only while at WOT. The rest of the time the charging system works normally.
Wish I could have gone but just couldn't. |

I am sure Dan can fill you in on it and at the same time bash me about a electric power stearing pump. |

The controversy is this: Cutting out the alternator eliminates the alternator's load on the engine, but lowers line voltage which reduces ignition and (electric) fuel pump performance. On a race car, those are going to be about the only electrical loads except for maybe a few dozen milliamperes for gauges. If I were forced to make a choice, I think I'd pick an efficient alternator, match its pulley size to the RPMs I'd be turning, and thus wipe out any worry over significant engine load and eliminate the hassle of externally charging the battery every few passes. This way, I'd eliminate changing (dropping) line voltage as a factor causing inconsistency in runs. This kind of service would probably mean a large pulley of maybe 3" diameter or so...race cars don't really need to charge at idle with the heater (what heater?) and headlights (what headlights?) and radio (what radio?) on! -DS, on vacation in Vancouver, studiously not thinking about headlamps...d'oh! |
