You are right, I felt a little deflated to be honest after the first drive and looking at "before" and "after" photos and the fairly marginal visual difference considering the amount of time, effort, money and stress it put on my relationship with my wife. She definitely let me know that my attention to domestic duties had suffered during the rebuild and I had "dropped the ball" around the house over the last 6 months. :) . In the flesh though, the difference between before and after is very much apparent. It was very presentable "before" however, it most definitely required machining, the bores were extremely worn and the head was in desperate need of a reco so the disassembly of the engine would have left it looking worse for wear without a repaint I'm thinking. It wouldn't have looked as nice as it would have been before a rebuild when pulled apart.

I am using a Pertronix Ignitor electronic ignition kit which is neatly concealed within the original Bosch dizzy. (No ballast resistor or external ignition module.) The points are gone!

The thermostat is made by Tridon.

It's amazing how fortunate I am with the fan bolts, seconds from ruining a brand new radiator core. Someone or something was looking out for me on that one!

No, the old battery was long dead and trying to find one of that style that didn't cost the earth from some over priced rare spares place just wasn't going to happen with the limited time I had and the already bashed budget. The car had to move ASAP.

I started getting tired of "factory" OEM style parts like the original worm wire radiator hose clips, they just didn't seal well at all (they over extended) and took forever to put on. I went back the the newer style radiator clamps which took all of 5 minutes to put on as well as I had faith in the newer gear. The new battery has 650 crank amps opposed to the factory style which had around 400. The electrical side of things, I just started appreciating the advancements in technology and reliability over the "historic" aspect.

To be honest I'm not sure. I had a quick look on the box yesterday but couldn't find anything but I know a few guys with slants that use them and they have had no probs.

That's worth finding out. Every thermostat design (dimensions, etc.) is available in multiple different temperature ratings. Too cold or too hot is bad. Optimal on your VE is an 82°C unit (that is 180°F, though I doubt anyone's uttered or printed "Fahrenheit" in Australia in at least 35 years).

It's good to know if there is an ongoing problem with the engine temp. This is where my lack of experience shines through.

you had the pleasure of the task and now will get years of enjoyment from your labor.. :D

I do have a question,, maybe it was discussed but I missed it,, what is the story on the oil filter arrangement?
Is that how Chrysler did all the Aussie slants?
If so why?

Steering box on passengers side for us no room for oil filter. They use a different oil pump with remote filter mount.

No. The '60-'61 right-hand drive slant-6 cars had a replaceable-element oil filter on the RH inner fenderwell, with flex pipes running to the oil pump.

The '62 cars had the same replaceable-element oil filter mounted to a bracket secured to the upper water pump bolts.

The '63-up cars had the setup shown on G-Bone's car.

All used the oil pump shown in Doc's post.
