They are cool. I wasn't spinning the tires the WHOLE way around the block...

Well, I finished up odds and ends on Project V (windows, hood, door handles...), did a front end alignment, and went to Motormiledragway (.com) on Sunday to test'n'tune it.

Good news: Nothing fell off, exploded, or broke.

Bad news: The old Webers are still not working right. Tuned the fuel pressure and got some better results, but it still wouldn't rev right and was breaking up some. Shifting at 4800 and surging and pinging some it went a best of 9.57 @ 70 MPH w/2.10 short time. Need to pull them all apart and rebuild them...

Given the time constraints, I'm swapping my ol' favorite Holley 500 2bbl on there for the Hagerstown race next weekend. Prolly try the Aussiespeed 2bbl Hurricane intake. I feel like the car should go at least high 8s with this setup.

Also, towing with the dolly and Slantkota worked quite well. I will have two Slant race vehicles at the track next weekend, one that also tows!

Alignment specs for the V:
Caster = +3.9 deg both sides
Camber = -1.5 deg both sides
Toe = 0.08 deg total

Car goes straight and true and handling feels good so far. Hooks up fine with the Falken Azenis 245/45-17.

Cheers,

Lou

Got the Aussiespeed intake on there with my trusty Holley 500 2bbl. Man, took a lot of trimming to get that intake to fit the studs and washers right, and had to hog out the carb holes to fit the 500 2bbl bores. Revs like a champ now and spins the hides in the garage with ease. We'll see how it flies!

Lou - it will be good to hear how this works out. It will be interesting to see if you experience any big plenum bog like Doc did while testing Stone's 4bbl intake. I am also wondering if the 2bbl Hurricane will have a bit better fuel distribution since the differences between primary and secondaries are not a factor. Also the two throttle bores are more centrally located. Let us know how the plugs look! Thanks, Wayne.

Wayne,

I was expecting bogs, even on neutral rev up, and especially when cold. It was 60 F this morning when I fired it up. Throttle response seems as good or maybe better than this carb on an Offy 4bbl intake at all temperatures. We'll see on the track.

Yes, this manifold (2bbl) would appear to have about the best distribution possible for any single-plenum intake I've ever seen. My plan is to eventually run MP-EFI with a 2bbl throttle body, but that's down the road a piece.

Cheers,

Lou

4800 sounds possibly indicative of a reversion. When you get time again perhaps you could jury rig some stacks to test for that.

It looked pretty funny but I duct taped some cardboard tubes to my Lynx/SU set-up for a quickie test and the change was immediate.
I then cobbled up some 10" stacks to use 'til I can find a few extra days to get in and hog the Lynx's too skinny runners out a bit.

If I had to do it all over again I would choose the 2bbl over the 4bbl Hurricane for the reasons we mentioned. But,I will split the plenum and turn the carb per Doc's recomendation on my 1st gen 4bbl.

The Aussie manifold will go on the back burner as the Dutra Fat Pak currently has my short attention span. :lol: Good news is that Duster Idiot has snagged a Fat Pak as well. Nice ta have someone to bounce ideas around. Wish us luck!

Good luck, Wayne...

Dick, I hadn't thought of that, but this thing starts sputtering/surging around 3600 and all the way above that. Same thing it did on the mild motor I had 'em on 4 yrs ago. I think it's just gunked up innards in these 20-30 yr old Webers, and their previous owner hadn't rebuilt them or opened them up. They weep a little gas out their bottoms and the stuff initially coming out was orange varnish goo. Jets could be really lean or something too - don't know what's in 'em.

When I make a real attempt at it, I will try your temporary stacks idea though!

Had 3 passes at Hagerstown on Fri eve 5/21/10. 14.8 @88 shifting at 4800, 14.53 @ 90 shifting at 5300, best pass was (shift at 5500 and hit harder off line):

1.999 60 ft
9.07 @ 75 in 1/8th
14.38 @ 91.2 in 1/4

Felt pretty good and smooth but needs tuning. 4500 RPM in the traps (3.25 gears and 25.2" tires).

Slightly massaged Aussiespeed 2bbl manifold worked well and throttle response is nothing short of excellent with the Holley 500, even when cold.

Hope to hit t'n't at Motormiledragway (.com) next Friday eve.

Great to meet everyone at Hagerstown and sorry we got rained out both days!

Wilkesboro best time of 9.08 @ 76 with 2.00 60 ft. Shift at 6000, traps at 5000 in 2nd gear (3.25 rear). Air was worse than Hagerstown, and more tuning to do. 8s in the 1/8th and 13s in the 1/4 are on the way...

I did corner weights last night, with me, helmet, and 1/3-1/2 tank (~5 gals) of gas. Should be 2705 lbs with a full tank, and 45% on rear.

Total = 2662 lbs
Left = 1362 (51 %)
Rear = 1169 (44 %)

I am feeling like it is time to get this thing on a road course!

Nice :twisted: A 3.73 gear and a set of slicks would have you flying 13's all day with your set up! I really like this build.

Thanks for the kind words.

Of course taller gears would be better, but that wouldn't allow me to do 125+ on the road course straights.

3.25's give me a pretty good top end. Sometime I might try getting a drag race rear gear, but I'm mostly interested in what the car will run in road race form.

Very true. Im more of a road race type myself. Nothing like going all out on a long straight!

Nice Lou.

Good to see you made some rounds at WRP in the mod class. Now my car is offically capable of 13:50's at 100 and change!

Staying tuned!
