I believe that a stick will free up some more ET Rick. Plus, with a clutch locked up your 4.56 gears will work better. :D

Both good points that I believe are very true. And since I can't cut a light in a race anyhow, I don't think a 4-speed will hurt my chances, from where they stand right now, one bit!

Don't sell yourself short. Get some laps under your belt and the lights will follow.

Lou does a damn fine job with a stick vehicle for sure. :D

In prepartion for the last race of the year I made just a few small changes in hopes that it might be just a bit faster. I ran the valves just before my back surgery. Then, I discovered that my throttle was not opening fully. I'm not sure that it was enough to make any difference, but it can't hurt. I backed the timing off to 28 degrees from 30 and I richened up the secondaries one step. I had a slight lean condition at WOT and hopefully a little more fuel will do the trick. All I need are a few gallons of race fuel and I should be set. My 2nd son Denny will be doing the driving while I watch from the sidelines. Hope he can win a race with it! that would be cool!

I ran my car today for the first time on a 1/4 mile with 4.56 gears. I changed timing, jetting and had the gear change. I ran a best of 14.10 compared to my 13.82 with my 3.91's. We had a direct headwind all day and many people were saying they were running slow, so that may be part of it.
I really think that Dennis may be right and the car may just not like that deep of a gear. I will likely leave them in and swap on my new head from Mike and see how it does. I definitely feel like I am giving away something on the top end with my head.

On a bright note the car only turns 6000 in the traps so no problems with the 4.56 gears there.

Tomorrow, I am going to change plugs and move the timing back up to 30 degrees and see how it does. I had it at 30 and changed it to 28 for today. A/F ratio was close to optimal at WOT.

What was your difference in MPH between the two gears.

The best runs with the 4.56's was a 14.0 compared to a 13.82 with 3.91's. The MPH was @ 94 with 4.56's and 95 with 3.91's

Car was running silky smooth as ever until it broke what looks like #2 rod right before the finish line. My son did a great job not panicking and got the car down from speed and off to the side of the track unharmed. That is the most important thing!

Disassembly may take me a bit with my back issue, but i will get something back in for next May even if it is a stock motor.

Pictures and report to follow at 6:00

Rick

Here are a couple pictures of the outside damage. What is gone inside? Let's see? Oil pan, block, camshaft, rod and piston, new Jeffrey windage tray, probably bent valves, maybe more...? When we opened the hood there was a 3-4" piece of the connecting rod laying on the edge of the hole. So it is broke in the middle. The small end was not broken but all of the wrist pin was gone. Is that weird? Or not?

I just fished these pieces out of the hole in the block. The rod is broke in the middle (obviously) and the big end is broke. The small end hole is stretched and oblong. The rod bolt is out on this piece. I know it is early and the engine is not out but does anyone see a hint of what went wrong? It was running perfect all day. No noises until this happened, and it had been carrying @ 58 # oil pressure. Let the speculation begin!

Were you using stock rod bolts / Nuts?

that's my guess. one broke or the Rod it self broke.

Sorry to hear that. :-(
