Did you pull the pick up screen off, and really get in there and clean the pick up tube? I have found some silly stuff hiding in ones I have used before.LOL
Also, check to make sure the pick up tube is tight.I had a BB pickup not tight enough one time, and it would not build pressure.
Sorry I am not more help.

Pick up screen was cleaned well after the engine failure. Tube is tight.

I pulled out the relief valve and it looked fine. it worked smoothly and has no marks. Reassembled the the pump and turned over a couple times and have plenty of oil coming up to the filter. re-install the filter and remove oil pressure line at the end of the main oil galley. Cranked for 2 seconds and oil is gushing out the main galley. Hooked back up my gauge and installed the distributor. Start engine and let it run for just 3 or 4 seconds. No oil pressure on the gauge and the engine shuts off as soon as I turn off the by-pass to the low oil pressure switch. So either I don't have pressure, or both my gauge and low oil pressure switch went bad at the same time.

I'm off to get another oil pressure gauge so I can check for pressure on a new gauge.

Rick

I am guessing your gauge and shut down are on a tee? Chunk of crap in the tee?

If oil is shooting up under cranking, then you should get some pressure. Some junk plumbing tee that's not drilled all the way through, or what Dennis said?

No, I have the oil pressure gauge in the rear of the main galley and the Low pressure cut off in the oil pump sender hole. No tee! I got this bad feeling.

I had a similar thing happen last year. I had been playing around with the stand pipe and apparently pushed the check valve over center which kept the oil from leaving the filter. As I remember it actually blew oil out where the filter mounts. Don't know if you are even using a standpipe but it's worth checking out. It doesn't make sense that it worked okay at first though.

 That is weird, Try running a manual gauge directly from the pressure port of the pump.If you haven't yet.

I am not running a standpipe, and I did try a second filter too. I picked up a new gauge tonight and will try that.

Think along the lines of internal leaks as well, not just blockages.
If that pump is putting out as it seems to be, all that oil must be going somewhere.
To illustrate, imagine a fuel pressure regulator stuck open dumping the pump output back into the tank instead of pressurizing the injection rail.

Although that wouldn't explain the 'pressurized' filter...

For that matter, what about blocked drains keeping the oil in the lifter galley, eventually starving the pump? That might explain why it had pressure briefly.

Any sign of oil getting to the rockers?

Just trying to explore options...

Some good ideas here. Maybe left out the front oil gallery plug?? If rear were out, you would have a puddle on the floor, but the front it would just drain back into the pan.

That would be a possibility , but why did I have 50 # pressure for 2-3 minutes? I will put my new gauge directly in the pump this evening.

FYI
I have an old stock worn 225 in our car, when I start the stock dash (red) light comes on and it takes1-2 seconds b4 it goes out on it's own. I do not know the pressure that works the light. it scared me at 1st , but it's been that way since.no engine noise at all .

I want to put in a pressure gauge now, after reading ur post, what is the race mount area for the tap into the oil system?

Installed the new gauge directly in the oil pump and I have zero pressure. I removed the oil filter and it still pumps oil up from the pan. But if I hold my finger over the hole in the pump it doesn't even try to build up pressure. So when I block the hole with my finger is that telling me something is wrong in the pump itself? If it was the pick up that was cracked it would not prime correctly would it?

I am thinking that the front galley plug is not the issue, because I am not getting pressure up to the filter. Oil goes through the filter and then into the block, correct?

I removed the pressure relief valve again and cleaned everything out. Using a mirror and a light to look up in the pump I can not see anything. When I re-assembled the relief valve I can here it going up and "tapping" when it hits its seat. It appears to be going clear against the seat without any problems It moves back and forth very freely.

I guess I will try and remove the pump. ( Not an easy task in an early A body)

Your insights are greatly appreciated!
Rick

If the main galley back towards the firewall is tapped just run the gauge off there. If it is not then you have to put a tee in before the oil sending unit on the pump and tie it in there. I have no light. I opted for the low oil pressure cut-off switch in place of the idiot light.

Rick, that happened to my brother's Hemi. 1 lifter galley plug was left loose and after running for awhile it the hydraulic lifters started to make noise as the plug backed out.
