I have found just the opposite to be true. Before cutout install: stock 66 Mopar alternator (39 amps?) MSD6a, electric fan and water pump drive, twin FI inline electric fuel pumps, Nitrous bottle heater, Headlights and tail lights for night racing = low battery before the next round of racing, and charging between rounds ( the small alt, cannot keep up). The bottle heater and fan/water pump are running in the pits, with the engine off (no alt output). After cutout install: Nippondenso 110 amp alternator, It can handle every load, simultaineously. I found if my battery is about half depleted, and I start the engine with the field circuit open, and then connect the field circuit, the engine idle rpm will drop about 200 rpm (from load). With the cutout the variable load on the engine, based on state of battery charge is removed from the equation. The alternator is only out of the circuit for 13-14 seconds, and the battery can handle the loads fine for that short a time period. The alt cutout is controled by a relay, in the field circuit, turned on by the same carb mounted micro switch that operates the nitrous. I have not had a dead battery since doing this, and don't have to hook up a charger between rounds. PS: this is on my Cuda not the 66 Valiant (but it will be). Dan, thanks for the input. |

What is the to-date price and parts list on the valiant? Wondering if it would be a feasible project for my 64 valiant. |

I will get the final price/part list together in a little while. I have to catch up on some other things first. I think we are in the $1500 ball park. It will be difficult to set a price on a couple of items, though. I did install a 3.91 SG 7 1/4 rear. This would be difficult to find used. I have had it for about 30 years in a variaty of cars. The other Item would be the converter. I bought it about 3 years ago, for my other car, as a temporary replacement, while my 8 inch converter was repaired. As for your 64. That is why I did this project. To show it can be done on a limited budget, If you can do the work yourself, and shop around. |

Installed a electric fan/water pump drive, bought on e-bay for $35 plus shipping, and a shorter alt belt for $6. Installed a toggle switch to open the alternator field circuit while make a run. Switches and misc wire/connectors for both about $10. Have a secondary metering block kit coming from Summit Racing. Should be here today, Then I will be able to adj the secondary jetting. About $60 with shipping. If it is not too hot on Sunday, might be able to get in the 14's on motor (I hope). PS: The 9 1/2 inch converter I used, will stall just about 4,000 rpm, with this motor. When it was in my 66 Cuda with a 170 it would stall about 3200 rpm. |

This might turn out to be a very long thread, if I don't break any thing. I plan on posting any and all changes, with cost and results. It will be over a long period of time, as I don't have much to spend on the car, or going to the track. Also installed 3/16 thick 100mm wheel spacers ($12) on the front wheels. I have a set of 2 piece, bolt together aluminum 13 inch front wheels, I got from Seymour 2 years ago ($100 with new P175/70R13 tires). The heads of the bolts were hitting on the edge of the 9 inch brake drums, and would warp the drums, when the lugs were fully tightened. |

Went to Bradenton, 8-19-07. It was extremely hot and crowded. There was a lot of down time, due to breakage. I only got three runs. I could have made more, but it was just too hot to sit in the lanes, without a break, between runs. The wheel spacers did cure the brake vibration. Two runs on motor, only. Best was a 60ft........2.032 330........6.048 1/8........9.534 mph.......69.78 1000......12.607 1/4.........15.257 mph.......84.38 One nitrous pass. 60ft.......1.815 330.......5.404 1/8........8.527 mph.......77.80 1000......11.299 1/4.........13.721 mph.......91.82 |

It's not picking up much MPH for the ET Charlie. Are you overgeared? ![]() Good ET though, and all the guts are still inside. ![]() ![]() |

Gear is 3.91, with a 9x22x13 circle track slick. I think the problem is either carb or cam. It lays down upstairs. Haven't been able to do any tuning, yet.![]() Good ET though, and all the guts are still inside. ![]() ![]() The guts are still in the 7 1/4 rear, also. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I don't know if I posted this in the thread. I did not use the 250 hp plate I bought at the swap meet, stated in the first post. I had a old 100 hp plate on the shelf, and used it with the other parts, purchased at the swap meet. I thought 250 was a bit much at this time. |

I'm thinking, I have my cam too far advanced. It is in 1 degree advanced. If I get time this week, I thing I'll retard it about 6-8 degrees. This cam is idling like a stocker. The converter I am using had a stall speed of about 3,000-3200 with the 170 and a milder cam. It is giving me 4,000 stall with this motor. The cam in my 170 is .434 lift and 264 adv. dur. The cam in the 225 is .460 lift, and 290 adv dur. |

The more I think about it, the more I think you might be right. That gear/tire worked OK with my 170, but the 225 doesn't have the rpm potential of the smaller engine. I am trying to find a taller tire to try. I have a 6 by 26 tire, but they are on cop car wheels with the large bolt pattern. I have a set off aluminum 15 inch SBP wheels but they do not have enough offset. The tire will hit the outer fender.

I'm getting ready to put taller tires under my junk too. I got some 9X27X15 ET Drags. Luckily, mine is BBP and I had a pair of Weld Draglites that will move the tire farther under the car. Then, I am gonna maybe finally get around to using my 4.30 gears with the good motor and trans brake trans. I really, really want to pull into the S/Pro lanes at RT66 this year to receive a good thrashing. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I wish I could help ya on some wheels Charlie, but I don't have any SBP stuff anymore. ![]() |
