Yea why buy new aftermarket rods unless you are going to take advantage of it with a better designed, shorter piston with good ring stacks. The import pistons have some sweat ring setups.

I noticed some of the HarleyDavidson pistons have bore sizes needed with good comp heights. I dont know what these pistons are designed like but it might be worth looking into.

Sweat rings? Sweaty perspiring rings?

Harley pistons are domed for the hemi combustion chambers. No good for wedge heads.

Well if you're building a 170 there's lots of choices for rod piston combos. I bought a set of Carrillo rods off ebay for $70. 6.125", .866" pin, Honda rod journals. Nascar rods, used one race, like new. These would cost over a $1,000. Plus they only weigh 550 grams, that's about 150 less than stock.
With a 1.375" VW or Toyota piston zero deck height.
I'm using them with KB Toyota 3TC pistons for one of my hemi head projects.

Seymour did a motor with Harley pistons in it once IIRC. It was a positive deck motor. :shock:

After the bite that Ross took outta my azz, I may be real interested in a set of good 6.7" rods. :evil:

Would you be willing to go into some detials of the Harley piston build. Which pistons, what rings they use and how you got a positive deck.


A positive deck piston that had enough room to do a D shaped dish would be a great setup. My guess is you needed the 198 rods to pull this off but I am not sure about that.

With all the new ring tech now there can be a lot of power gained with the right choice. Thats like free HP when building a engine. It can be amazing how much power a low tension, thin ring with a vacuum pump can make. Much of the HP gains in the last 10 years have come from ring & piston grove tech. Whats really surprizing is how good some of these setups are working in street engines. Giving more power and lasting much longer than the moly file rings.

What I figured out is the 170 rods are the same c-c as the chevy 350 rods which you can get all day long. Than, if you got the "long rod" ones that are like .3 or so longer you could get a shorter piston like the 2.2L. I talked to the shop about welding the journals and cutting them to accept the width and bottom end of the Chevy rods, the price wasn't unreasonable, but not for an average build. The only problem is I would have to buy a 170 on top of these costs, but if I already had one than it wouldn't be a problem. As for now I plan on prepping my 225 rods the best I can, cryo treat them, and start with 10psi and work my way up to 20. This slant may never go in my car, it may be a test stand engine, but should defintley test my skills as a builder. Also the Mopar small block rods will work for the 225, I just don't know about piston selection....

Note:

Harley pistons are crossflow, the valve reliefs are on opposite sides of the piston (perpendicular to piston pin, like hemi pistons), not next to each other (parrallel to piston pin, like wedge pistons)

Daaammmmmnnnn, I get busy at work and dont write anything here and look where you guys go!! Alright, no off the wall pistons!!! :evil:

We will have pistons for our engine with our pin size and thats that!! Tom is going to have the whole sha-bang done up on a 7" rod. Nobody liked my 6.9" idea evryone wanted 7". Well there you go! We will not have to run around and "find something that works". And by the way the rods are 99.9999999999% done the last casting is giving me a headache as i have done it several times and it keeps messing up as it comes out. As soon as they get it Tom he can finish themas the pistons are the last puzzle piece. As soon as I can pry the money out of my wifes hands and tom calls me I will have my set in my hands, yes yes I'll so pic's.

I was going to buy those roller rockers from T&D but now I am using that money to have my block machined.

Ok boys dont mess this up with "can we use one of these?" lets get these parts rolling and the more they sell the cheaper it gets.

I bet everyone that reads this is wondering what is in it for me? ZERO I am the same as all you but I want parts made for my engine, not will kind of work. PLAY NICE :D

Your efforts are appreciated and like the rest of us that set these things up--they start as an effort to get a part we want, and we leverage the buying power of the community to get a better deal. I know it eats up a lot of your personal time, and so thanks for pursuing this.
