Well I just looked on the summit website and it stated the cover is the stock height so I'll just go by that.

Please correct me if I am wrong. Here are the people who might be interested in valve covers: wvenable, bmimken, GTS225, dietz_diggler, NewLancerMan, Moparmodeler, lowbuget, 73NorternDuster, 68barracuda, armyofchuckness, rock, stonthk, slantscamp, Jester, dusterguy225, 68darrt, CrazyDart, Hyper72Valiant, Cars, Pierre, terrylittlejohn, moparfreak77, 60Pioneer, Useless, and Barracuda65 from the Valiant 50 forum!

According to Dan @ EAS this is enough for a full production casting run. Dan also has four slant covers in stock at this time. Pharmboy is still after AAA but they are awaiting word from Tay Offenhauser (main Dude). If we end up going with Dan I will also ask what he can do for anyone also placing an order for an intake(since our numbers might not be high enough for a current group buy). Maybe his 5% club discount could be had. Thanks for your patience.

If we're talking about a whole production run for this buy, now is the time for somebody to remind Tay Offenhauser about the need for a PCV provision on this cover. See this thread. There are a few different ways this might be accomplished. The biggest obstacle isn't putting a new hole in the valve cover, it's making provisions for a baffle so the PCV valve doesn't suck up the liquid oil that's spraying around under the cover. The easiest thing for Offenhauser to do would be to provide the covers with a hole to accept the grommet and GM breather per the linked thread. That setup is known to work well, and it uses off-the-shelf parts that can easily be had. If I had my druthers, the chimney near the front of the valve cover would be deleted, replaced by a flat hole with cam ears for a twist-in oil cap (similar cam-in/twist-in hole as found on '70+ stock valve covers). Then an ordinary Ford-type oil cap could be used, which has twist-in fittings at the bottom and a grommet hole at the top. There'd be a plain hole near the rear of the valve cover, suitable for installation of an ordinary grommet. Into this grommet could be installed a vented or ducted breather, depending on what air cleaner setup is in use on any particular car.

If Mr. Offenhauser is interested in making such improvements to the cover, and someone is needed to coordinate communication on that technical matter with him, I'll volunteer; let me know.

No real reason to make provisions for a road draft tube, which was used only on '60 cars (plus '61 non-California and '62 non-CA/non-NY). Just retrofit PCV, which is better in every way.

Oh, and stonethk, you needn't worry about cover clearance. The "real tight, non-stock cover might not fit" situation is a 225 in a '60-'62 Valiant/Lancer. There's plenty of room between the heater box and the valve cover on a 170 in that application, even if the Offy cover were a little taller than stock.

Dan thanks for joining this thread. I agree a more user friendly version of this product would be great. Do I think it will happen? Well....not really. Not trying to be a downer here just wondering what would be Tay's motivation to retool a product that has been in existance/production since the early 60's. This product has outlasted the engine it was designed for as have many Offy products. Even if it was retooled/improved -would it jump off the shelves? Would it pay for all the trouble? Not sure there but my gut says probably not. A redesign would cost money. If it did in fact happen, who would pay? Probably the customer. In all honesty , individuals could probably modify their own covers cheaper as your ideas using commonly found inexpensive parts proves. I am trying my best to get the lowest price possible and I know mods will be required. I guess I'm not that worried. If other members disagree let me know -it is a group buy.

As far as modifying a valve cover to work with a PCV and a more modern oil cap...I'm going to be doing that when I get a used valve cover next week. I'll include adding a baffle for a PCV valve, as well as modifying the front hole to take a standard oil cap. Anything else you guys would like to see done to one of these by someone more daring(foolish) who's go a used part at his disposal? Oh, and all of it will be done with hand tools in a less-than ideal environment just to make sure it's easily done by people who have a dedicated workspace and decent equipment.

SS Dan is right...now would be the time for Offenhauser to update this valve cover with baffles and a PCV port.

Do I think that Offenhauser is going to update this design? Doubtful. I'm sure that this item counts for a very small part of their total sales.

That being said, it is pretty clear that the people that would purchase this item at this time, or down the road, are asking for an improved product.
We are not the 350 crowd (thank god!) but we hold our own. In three days, we've gathered enough interest for 25+ valve covers and, what, a half dozen manifolds? Plus, how many of you are running, or have run in the past, an Offy intake of some sort? Sounds like a market to me.

Maybe the route to take is to approach Offenhauser with our request, then ask them flat out how many pre-orders they would need, and how much each valve cover would cost, to make the requested improvements.

I guess that we should just be happy for a discounted price with a group buy...but speaking just for myself, I would pay a bit more for this item if I could pull it out of the box, bolt it on, and drive off 15 minutes later.

Either that, or we can approach Clifford for a group buy. :wink:

The Clifford valve cover is made by Offy I believe. I've held both in my hands side by side and other than the name on them they were identical.

The Clifford that Bill has on his Dart does have baffles in it. That seems to be a hit or miss thing though.

Put me down for a valve cover.
