Those are very good numbers Charrlie. Maybe nothing serious is wrong with it.

Very disappointed. I busted my butt, to build this 170 engine, in time for Knoxville. Wanted to set the D/N record (it would have). I'm pretty sure it burned a piston. Acted just like the Barracuda did, at Elk Creek several years ago, when I went lean, and melted a piston. No way I can fix this in time for Knoxville. Engine is .060 with TRW forged pistons. I don't have any more .060 pistons in stock, and no other 170 I can build in time. Need to reinstall the 225 I just pulled out, to make Clay City.

Pull the head and verify the damage first. You might get lucky. I’ll try not to destroy that D/N record too badly...

Planning to pull the head on Monday. If I can't come up with a running 170, I'll put the head back on the 225 I just pulled out, and put it back in the car. Need to have a running race car for Clay city.
PS: Hit the record as hard as you dare. Ask any one, I'm not afraid of putting bigger jets in the nitrous system. All I need is two runs to get it back. :P :P :P

Not even going to bother with a compression test. Pulled the plugs. Nothing left of #3 . Number 4 had started to melt. #5 and 6 were a little lean. # 1 and 2 look ok. Will start to pull the engine in a day or so. I want to check the nitrous system.

I can't do pictures, myself. But Chuck (armyofchuckness) took a video of the run.

Dang, sorry to hear that, Charlie... I was thinking you would kill that record pretty well. Good luck with the "reconfiguration". Don't burn up all your motors before Clay City, OK?

Still have the 225 engine, that was "knocking" (loose converter bolts).

Still a slim chance the 1/8 mile D/N record will fall in 1 1/2 weeks.

Dug a 170 block out of the pile, and cleaned it up. Honed the cylinders. Pulled a crank and rods, out of an old engine, that had broken a piston a few years, ago, and hurt the cyl wall. Had a new set of stock std pistons, and rings on the shelf. Machine shop pressed the pins while I waited. pulled a Racer Brown ss-14 cam off the shelf (can't run too big a cam with no valve notches). Cam is in at 101 degrees. Short block is together except for the tin. Will set a head in place, tomorrow, to check valve clearance (should be OK, as pistons are .040 in the hole, but will hurt compression). CR should be 10-1 with a shim gasket, and the big valve head from the 170 I just smoked. Hope to have the short block done tomorrow. Then pull the head and swap it on. Swap engines, and check the nitrous system, by the weekend.
Keep your fingers crossed for me.

My get up and go, got up and went. I haven't thrashed this much in many, many years. Was out in the shop at 5 am this morning. Heading for bed.

Update:
Good: 170 short block is completed, with timing cover, oil pump, pan installed. Intake, headers and head removed from bad 170, in the car.

Bad: Cyl head from bad engine is not in good condition, Number three chamber has aluminum all over it. Might also have a warped valve. Not sure if I can fix it in time, and use on the replacement engine. Will have to see if I have another head that just needs freshening.

Way to go Charlie! Don’t push too hard though. Life is too short. Gotta enjoy the ride. 8)
