Matt
There is a void on the crank right where that booger is on the Damper.
I guess it moved metal from one surface to the other.
It's not pretty.

I always Loctite my cam bolt and also use an air impact on them for tigntening purposes. Sometimes they can be not completely centered or seated on the cam snout if you are not careful.

Makes sense now why stan's engine was so lazy.

I bet that dowel was broken a while back allowing the cam to become retarded quite a bit.

I had forgotten to Locktite the bolt.
The cam bumper is what kept it close and not flying around in the cover.
I think it was loose on the last two runs, but not sheared.
It sheared on the return road when it quit running and would not restart.
Not the reason for it being lazy.
It ran it's best time by a half second on the second to last run.

That is one reason high performance big blocks went to the 3 bolt cam/sprocket.

Stan was there any signs of metal transfer on the crank flange?

No Seymour, the crank, flywheel surfaces all look great.
Next week after it warms up a little I will pull the pan and look at the bearings.

I guess that is good, but very odd it didn't tear up the crank coming off. :? :?

What do you mean Rick? I don't understand what you are saying.
It did mess up the front, enough to ruin the crank I don't know.
The rear flange is fine.
Splain it to me again.

When you said - "No Seymour, the crank, flywheel surfaces all look great." I thought you were saying the crank snout was Ok. I guess I misunderstood. :)

No problem, I think he was wondering if I had a big imbalance in the crank rod assembly.

I got the engine torn down yesterday.
Nothing unexpected.
Bearings looked very good, number 3 rod had a small discoloring down the center, could not feel anything.
Mains looked great.
Pistons as well.
My Racer Brown cam had a full grove rear journal, I didn't remember that!
Might explain the volume of oil on the rockers.
Now when time permits off to the machine shop to get advice on crank nose.
