I went to install the rocker arms and shaft and found that I have a later rocker assembly with the stepped rear bolt and smaller hole on the bottom of the rocker shaft. I'd like to use this assembly since it is really nice and has been run as an assembly on my other engine. But my cylinder head has the larger rear bolt. So can I just bore out the bottom rear hole on the rocker shaft to the correct size and use a non-stepped bolt? I didn't see any reason why I couldn't but thought I'd ask.

My plan is to have this engine (Or should I say the engine in my car now) ready as a backup. I want to have everything except for the intake and headers on my engine and ready to swap in complete if needed. That way if something bad does happen, I can have the car back up and running in just a couple hours.

Color scheme is aluminum and blue. Once everything is buttoned up on the front and top, I will move on to the windage tray and pan modifications.

You can drill it IF the shaft is not too hard. I think I drilled one once. :D

Front is about all buttoned up with some new SS bolts to boot. Just a couple things to go and it will be ready to run.

Yes, that will work just fine. I did this on the motor in my brother's 83 van and it has worked for years with no problems.

Beautiful engine, by the way! Powder coated?

No it is the blue anodized coating / paint from duplicolor. Over chrome it really does look anodized. Over paint it looks good but not quite anodized.

Head studs arrived and are installed. I also drilled out the rear hole on the rocker shaft and got the rocker assembly on the engine.

Couple questions:

With an 11.5 to 1 is there a recommendation on the spark plug heat range? Colder than stock. It is a drool tube head.

Also what weight oil would you run on a brand new engine?
5/20 10/30 ???

it is a stock 340 plug, their 5 steps colder than rn14y. bpr7 is the ngk plug if memory is correct!

Sounds like a good recommendation to me. Autolite 63s would be another crossover, and I have those in the turbo motor now. Make sure you do not use the extended tip plugs - detonation...

I'd like to report I drove Dads car and didn't even break anything. I know it is unusual for me to drive and not break, but everything worked out great this time! Even got to make some 14 second passes with it!
Now.... I don't plan on driving it with his new engine once that is done. We all know what happens to the "new" engines :D
