don`t sweat it, your going to be fine, you have the pan off and everything was together, if you large amount of crank end play was the thrush bearing hopefuly it didn`t hurt the surface of the crank, as for the cam bearings i have swaped new cam on old bearings with no problems, make sure the new cam spins freely.

That bearing doesn't look eaten up enough to cause 1/4" of crank end-play. I'd bet the thrust faces of the crank have been eaten up.

you would think the bearing would be sacraficed before the crank,or the two together. was there any signs of someone has replaced the bearing before?

I've only taken apart a couple of engines with thrust bearing failure, but both had eaten into the crank. We have enough spares floating around here we can get Midi fixed up pretty easily.

The pieces of metal that MiDi found floating in his oil pan, were from the thrust bearing. I mentioned to Cj that there was close to 1/4" of play, but it was only an estimation. Upon further inspection, and an easier view of the internals, its not 1/4", but without a dial indicator I can't say for exactly. The bearing itself is torn up pretty good.

Seems like that happens mostly when there is lack of oil, and extreme heat. According to MiDi, his car hasn't over heated too many times, but all it takes is once. I think if we just measure everything, and throw some bearings at it, we should be in business. The rest of the engine looks good.

Cool. Come up with some rings for that thing too. I have a spare timing set if it's needed.
