The first slant race, I ever attended, was at Rockingham. They ran their meet 1/8 mile, but the slant race 1/4 mile. Some of us ran both the slant race and the regular "track" bracket race. First pass 1/4 mile, 2nd pass 1/8 mile, 3rd pass 1/4 mile, etc. Think that wasn't fun, trying to remember wich strip you were raceing for?

The reason why 1/8 mile records can only be set as part of an 1/8 mile Slant 6 Points race is the same as why we don't let the holder of a C class record claim the B class record eventhough his time might be faster. One of the purposes of records is to encourage particpation and to let more racers have a chance to set a record. When we used to have the 1/8 mile race at Farmington Tom Drake really promoted record setting attemps by offering some special prizes and it rally helped turnout there. It should be relatively easy to make some of the Western races 1/8 mile especially at tracks that run other brackets to the 1/8 mile only. People that want to do this should get with Edd Jesilowski who is doing the scheduling for next year.

The effect of gearing on 1/8 mile times is overrated, just leave it geared for the 1/4 and it will do fine.

I don't have a dog in the fight either, but why not run 1/8th mile one day and 1/4 mile on the other day of a two day race? That way more records could be set and participation might increase. On the topic of records, how about listing the body style and the location where the record was set like they do in the NHRA?

61-62 Lancers rule!!

And I'd also like to see the weight of the car as it ran for the record. Just as a reference. No dog either.

Post subject:  More thoughts

More thoughts. I like running 1/4 on a 1/4 mile track. Not sure why, but I don't think I would enjoy it as much running the 1/8 on a 1/4 track. I will unlikely never hold a record and I'm Ok with that. I think the record chasers are great, and I enjoy them breaking them, but there are not a lot of new people who are going to break records. Just my opinion. The current record chasers are setting the bar mighty high for the future racers. It will take a lot of dedication, hard work and more money to break a lot of these records. And that is how it should be.

I guess what I'm thinking is that in the future we will see less runs for records instead of more. I may be totally wrong here and would be happy to be proven wrong. But I want our races to be as appealing to as many people as possible. If racing 1/8 mile diminishes that, then I'm against it.

All that was said to give my opinion on 1/4 mile VS 1/8. I like running 1/4 on 1/4 mile tracks. And I'd rather give the splits to the record chasers than change the race to 1/8 mile on the 1/4 tracks. Not sure I know why?

Nothing above should be misunderstood to think I don't like the records being broken. I can't wait to see Nitrous Mark hit the track!!

Lots of good ideas here. Keep 'em coming. I don't really care whether it's 1/8 or 1/4 race, or maybe just a mild pref for 1/4...

If we did split 2 day races into an 1/8 day and 1/4 day (Mark's and Lou's thought), then it would be up to the track coordinator (Slant 6 race rep) to choose based on public opinion. If no one wants 1/8, then he/she can choose to do all 1/4.

Seymour is right, 1/8 mi records were developed specifically to encourage participation. I would bet a bunch of people will get to the tracks to set new 1/8 mi records if someone in the West offers an 1/8 mi race. It is as simple as asking the track to run 1/8th on that day, if it's a 1/4 mile track.

i think The nostalgia Event @ SpeedWorld in March Should be on the Points list... its on the site so why not have it count... now granted its my home track but its only one of two races that i can event make it to(vegas, Speed World AZ).

but as far as the split counting it seems that the car setup for 1/8 mile will always have the advantage...

Even at the Nostalgia event this last weekend there was no 1/8 mile class...

I personally like running 1/8th better, less wear and tear on car and I start to get uncomfortable over a 100mph.I am going to talk to the people at my local 1/8th mile track and see if they would bee interested in haveing a slant race there. How many west coasters would come to Irwindale for a sanctioned slant race?Wouldnt bee fair or fun for me if I was the only one.Just anouther thought.Mark

How about discussing a reasonable spread on the weight breaks? You have 350# between A and B, 350# between B and C, and 500# for D. :?

I would think having splits wouldn't hurt participation at races, it might even increase participation.
