As far as cost, I'm really not going to be much different than a stock go-through of a used head. The valves and components that I'm using are "stock" parts...just not from a Slant.

Port work will be the major difference in price, but is a requirement whether it's naturally aspirated, turboed, or supercharged. More flow is more power.

Grrr. My first real piece of bad news came today...I have to find different retainers. The stock Ford 3.8 retainers pictured earlier are very "tall"...even after grinding the max safe limit on the spring seats, we're still at 120 lbs of seat pressure and limited to .358" valve lift.

My options are thus:
1) Different retainers
2) Thinner spring coils
3) Longer valves

Probably in that order...

Good news!

Ford Taurus retainers (YFIZ-6514-CA) fixed the deal for $2.42 each. We now have 80 lbs at the seat and room for 0.500" of valve lift.

Given that my flow didn't stall at any point, I'm looking for a cam in the following range: 215 @ .050" and 0.500" of lift. Any suggestions? It'll be a boost motor. What LSA should I be looking for?

You're going to need at least 1.6 rocker arms to get .500" with 215 @ .050

Figure out which lobes will work here:

Hi Brooks,

I apologize if I am missing this in the rest of the thread, but can you state the exact valve dimensions (head diam, OAL), part numbers or application, and same for springs and retainers. I read through all 7 pages and did not see unambiguous answers. I see the parts list up front, but am not sure which ones you are using in the end.

Thanks very much,

Lou

No problem Lou! I definitely kept my options open because I was afraid of getting stuck in a situation where I couldn't find an off-the-shelf solution.

BTW, the definition of tedious is to look up every 7mm valve on the Sealed Power website so that you can cross-reference search for the corresponding valve spring diameter, all in the name of finding a retainer that may work.

Without further adieu:
Intake: V4488 from Ranger 2.5
Exhaust: V4553 from Ranger 2.5
Springs: VS1648 from Windstar 3.8
Retainers: YFIZ-6514-CA from Taurus 3.0
Keepers: Ranger 2.5

I didn't source guides or stem seals, so I'm waiting on that info.

I believe a better gasket as a template and more experience could net another 10-15 com out of each side. I have another head and Mike J's number...

I second Rick's interest - I've also been waiting for an update. I'd love to do this too...
