I let about 2 or 3 gallons drain out. No biggie - have a large enough plastic tub that fit perfect and is still under there - only with a cover over it now to stop stuff from falling into it. Probably start loosening stuff next... Just hit the slow mo part of my day... Been up since 4:30 and have already done a ton of lifting and moving and stacking etc... Little by little... |

Given that you lost compression on 2 cylinders... I would also worry that the intake/exhaust gasket might have a leak on those two cylinders as well... if they leaned out the mix and compromised the head gasket and maybe the valves and seats, then I would also suspect the extra lean/ hot exhaust might also have burnt the IE gasket as well... Just thinking of anything else that might be part of the cause and effect...that we could fix to keep it from happening again.... |

DI - my plan has always been to replace the IE and head gaskets all along... I know there is an exhaust leak in there someplace so I figured it was going to be part of this process. ![]() Plenty of room to work on the van! LOL When sis is at work there will be plenty of space! |

Hey guys, what would be the proper next step? Take the rocker assembly off next? If so, what is the suggested order of removal? I figure I need to keep all the push rods in order for one thing... Gonna get a piece of cardboard and rig it to hold each in order... Body still not cooperating right this moment, so I have a few minutes to take my time and figure this out... dan |

1- rocker arm shaft (put a zip tie through each end bolt hole or leave the bolts in place to keep the rocker - spacer sequence correct) 2- pull the head and manifolds as a unit, separate when the nuts are more accessible. This assumes you have some kind of hoist. |

me and a neighbor that just walked over and told me to grab him when I was ready to lift the head - no hoist... |

How do they keep then engine cool in the A-series vans? Seems like those engine compartments are pretty confined. Even in my '67 dart, there is a ton of space but air movement in traffic seems inadequate.... brian |

I lifted the head and this fell out... ![]() How often does a head gasket fall out and show this? I am praying that - that is all it is, and there is no more damage! Will know better tomorrow when hopefully I will be able to get the head off completely. |

A belly pan under the van diects the air flow passing through the grill to the radiator. These vans are notorious for cooling problems, especially with a V-8, and owners sometimes build fresh air tunnels through the cab straight to the radiator or use extra electric fans.

It's not rare, my lean condition caused burn through same way. If you google that you'll see lots of similar pics. For me there was a tick tick tick that I thought was an exhaust manifold leak - but it was the detonation burning through the head gasket. Dan, you mentioned that you might have heard an exhaust leak, it might have been detonations. |

Thanks Reed, yes it seems like a blower going all the time would be a good thing to have on there. |
