In My Opinion I would get the Pickup closer to the Floor of the Pan.

In the ruster pan the Pickup is almost touching the floor.

Yes, it needs to be flat on the floor. That is what Mopar intended and is best for oil control.

I set mine up so there is about 1/8" of "pushback" when I do the test fit w/o gasket, and then when I bolt down the pan it is snugly touching. I use axle grease to mark it and check for flat and solid contact with the pan floor.

It usually takes me 1-3 hours for just this step of checking and adjusting pickup contact with the floor (rotate/bend and adjust length of pickup tube). Combined with fabricating the pan (8-20 hrs), this is the most time intensive step of building an engine (or augmenting an engine for g-force duty). Head porting would probably be second.

Correct, The pick up will extend to the floor when I'm done. That is the purpose of the metal jig I made. I can make the pick up to fit and see it before the pan goes on.

Yes this is going in the Valiant and it is the F Body pan. That gives me room to go back a couple inches with the sump. I measured off another early A-Body pan to be sure. I also am notching the K frame for a little more room on the front side.

So did I mess up by opening the pick up to have another entrance for the oil? It seemed like a good idea when I did it :? :? I know it does not give me more oil, but I thought that if it made it easier to get oil to the pick up tube inside it had to be a good thing. ??? Maybe not? I have plenty more tubes to use if I need to.

I am not much worried about uncovering it if I put a baffle behind the sump to keep the oil from sloshing back on launch. Plus I will have 2 1/2 extra quarts of oil in the sump.

***Update- While searching Rock Auto I came across replacement pickups and they had two openings on them almost identical to what I did to mine. So I think I am good to go.


One Question - I know the pick up is supposed to be touching the pan. I have pulled many engines apart and some were touching and some were not. But is it to support the pick up tube on that end? I never much liked the idea of the pick up being forced against the floor. Not sure why! And if it is just for support I would rather keep the sump just off the floor and run a separate brace from the pick up tube to my Windage tray or something else as a brace.

Greg, It sounds like you kept yours just off the pan bottom? Is that correct.

Yes, you want to have it close to the bottom of the pan but not touching. The jig you made to approximate the new pan's depth is the way to go.

The Covalt Clan has some nice looking machines and oil pans Now.

As well as one of the Best Slant 6 Events on the East Coast?

Now get them boys to start fixin their own clutches and engines!
Why should dad have to do all of the work all of the time??

To do this the properly way we may need to make some adjustments. "Now get them boys" should be "Now git dem boys - better yet don't capitalise now. fixin-very good - git rid of dat g. Their own clutches - should be- let em fix there own damn clutches or let dem boys fix thoes clutches they own damn self. Why should dad - no - why should Daddy have to fix there $**+ all the damn time?

Greg you could hit the redneck check button next time or just read Mater's posts. Don't read the posts by Dennis, he is from up north and his Mamma made him go to school. :D
