Post subject: | Power brake upgrade - advice please |
I am new to the car crafting hobby, and the Internet is my mentor, so play along & please dumb it down as far as you can for the new guy ![]() Recently acquired a 1975 Dart Swinger. It has front discs, rear drums, but they are not power brakes. Being from a generation where all new cars came standard with power brakes, this pretty much scares the hell out of me! My long term plans are to replace the /6 with a crate 360, but that is years down the road. Where is the best place to acquire a power brake kit? Do I have to replace the current brakes entirely, or do the kits supplement the current system? With a 360 in the future, would I be better off converting to all wheel discs now? Just need a little guidance, thanks! Love this website, already I have learned a lot by reading back through archived posts. |

The actually still make some SUV's with front discs and rear drums y'know, and they are heavier than your car ever will be.... The manual disc brakes are a good system, you can order a new power booster, pushrod, and master cylinder form an auto parts store ($$$), or go to a junkyard and find a used one (might be a gamble there...). Good luck on the rear disc system unless you are 'rich'. -D.Idiot |

Go to the gym and do some one legged squats for your "braking leg." this will build up your strength so you can stop without getting too scared. the non power brakes will probably grow on you after a while. i wasnt too excited about them at first my self. i now prefer the non power brakes on my car over the power assisted ones in other cars i drive. |

Had a 70 Dart Swinger converted to a 440. When I got it, still had 10 drum brakes and you'd better plan your stops well in advance. Converted over to LBP manual disc brakes and stopping was every bit as good (and perhaps better) than our 93 Dakota with standard PDB |
