Basically you listen for exhaust leaks. A mechanics stethoscope helps or even a long pipe that you can put your ear up to and move into various places.
Once you suspect a leak point, wait until the engine is dead cold and start it, then quickly stick your hand near the place you think is leaking, you will feel the hot exhaust gas pressure. Work quickly, you won't have more then 90 seconds to do the "feel test" before the manifold gets too hot to work around.

another way is to put tranny fluid in the carb(engine running), pour smallamount at a time, your smoke trail will let you see the leak!!!! good luck!
