Post subject:  A833 Leaking question

I have a 81 Ram with a A833 .. The trans had been leaking scince i got it (8 months ago). Ok the other day i whiped down the trans to find out where the leak was comming from and i found that after a day the oil seemed to be commming from the reverse switch, Is this a common problem? Just kinda wondering.

Mine leaks there... and around the input shaft and around the shift selector shafts and apparently around the side cover. But not around the output shaft. go figure.

Of course, mine also sounds like it's about to spit a gear out of the side of the case when in 4th. :(

If someone else 'serviced' your tranny and screwed the reverse switch into place incorrectly or buggered up the threads in the aluminum case then this could happen. You might try draining the oil, pulling the switch, cleaning the 'socket', adding a little 'goop'/RTV to the threads of the switch and threading it back in. Let cure then refill tranny.

It's time for rebuild your seals are all shot, seal kits are about $20, instructions are in the articles section, if it sounds like O/D isn't in good shape you migh have some bearing problems or the countershaft isn't in great shape....

I don't want to hijack the thread...

I've known mine is hosed, from the day I bought the truck. It's not worth wasting a seal kit on right now, the bearings are shot & I'm pretty sure the counter shaft is chewed up. I don't drive the truck much and keep the speed < 45mph; I have more important things to spend money on right now. I'll swap the tranny later (I started a discussion on this board about converting to an A904 earlier)
