so my cousin came over from Long Beach and taught me how to take a 225 apart..

on first inspection we found a bent rod.. a little further and we found that the crank had a scratch in it.. and the pistons were bored to .030.... he said it was pretty much a lost cause, what i sepnd in new parts and machine work, i could get a new engine for it..

The engine that is currently in my valiant has a new head on it, so i may just buy a block taht comes with crank/cam/pistons etc.. and put the new head on it... hook up the super six.. and i'm off!!!

i'm 19 and this is my frist look at the insides of an engine, it's great, but not as complicated as i thought it would be...

When you put bearing caps back on make sure you put them on in the same direction you took em off .... don't ask, I found that out the hard way.

I wouldn't trust a parts store rebuilt engine. Go grab a JY block and take it to a reputable local machine shop. Or if the JY block looks good enough you can just put new bearings/rings in it and off you go.

...so it needs the crank turned and one rod, and possibly a bore job and new pistons? Big whoop  This is all run-of-the-mill rebuild stuff ...at least if you build it you will know what you have when you are done. And I don't think you will save $$$ by getting a reman short block, either.

yeah, find a good machine shop (ask around at a race track), this is very normal stuff that you are dealing with, stay away from the auto parts stores engines unless you don`t wan`t to learn anything and want an engine with parts inside that are a mystery, anyways, these are rebuilds and NOT NEW, so do it yourself and get the right stuff the way you want it

you can get the crank ground, or get a fresh one, ask around at some good auto parts stores like NAPA for one with matching bearings (i got a fresh crank WITH bearings (mains and rod bearings) for $125 NO CORE CHARGE ... seems to be that not too many people are building slants and the crank warehouses have loads of them.. make sure you get the correct crank for your application (cast or forged, small or large pilot)

a bent rod isnt a problem, someone on here should have one for free if you ask...

the bore @ .030 is fine, it may or may not to be bored again. the slant can be bored .100 over, mine is .080 and cast pistons are avail on the shelf , .060 is very common also

if you don`t bore it, then get the bores cross hatched at the shop and use a good set of cast rings... if you get it bored, then use a good set of moly rings

good luck,

if you are unsure of anything, ask here and we`ll try to help, make sure you label all parts taken out and keep it all organized and CLEAN

Did your cousin take measurments or just do a visual inspection?
Is there a ring ridge at the tops of the cylinders?
How round are the cylinders, what is the piston to bore clearance?
What size are the crank journals, are they still round?

I agree with Thropar, this engine may be a great choice for a inexpensive overhaul, but you really need to take some measurments. Get a "rebuild kit", a good used connecting rod, some polishing on the crank and a hone in the bores and slam it back together.

well i don`t have a shop reference, but you should be able to piece together a `kit`... maybe ask the kit supplier (PAW?) for specs duplicating the 252 grind...

anyone have a reference for a supplier of internal engine parts?
