4.11 or 4.56 rear gear will really help.

who has done alot of towing with the slant six i was talking to Richard Ehrenberg from mopar action and he was telling me i either need to change to a 360 or big block in order to pull my 75 coronet or i will simply over work the slant the coronet will be legal so i'm now thinking i'll just drive it around to car shows |

towing with a slant is doable. My brother-in-law (from whom I bought my D-100) used the truck and a tow dolly regularly to tow other vehicles. Including his 440 powered D-150 dragster wanna be. Just don't expect miracles. Don't pull out in front of fast moving traffic without LOTS of space to accelerate. Be safe. |

I could swear Slant Cecil pulled a trailer with a Charger using a slanted pickup...you might have to keep it in 'direct' for most of the trip... watch the temp gauge, and take it easy. -D.Idiot |

Back in 1965, before I knew anything at all about slants, I towed a 63 Ford Galaxie, with a 1964 Dodge Dart, with a 170 3 speed stick. The Ford was my race car, and we towed from Rochester, NY. to northern NJ. with a tow bar. That had to be one of the stupidest things I have ever done. The engine pulled it, but was really abused, and the weight of the Ford pushed that poor Dart all over the road. |

I brought my aspen up from suffolk virgina this summer with a tow bar and my slanted d-150 truck.  It was 10 hours drive comming home on the interstate. The tow bar made manuvering in traffic pretty tricky!  I made it over some pretty good mountains! I would not hesitate to pull the car if I had a trailer instead of the tow bar. I would be much more concerned about brakes and weight distribution. A panic stop or oversteer could throw your truck and car into the ditch. I feel much safer just driving the car if it's possible. If I knew I would be towing often, I would consider an extra transmission cooler. I also change the oil more often under that kind of heavy service. I've considered a 318 for my truck to add a little more towing pep, but to say I "need a 360 or big block" is just silly. My trucks '72 motor has LOTS of miles, and is still packing only a 1bbl holley carb. I think it's fine as-is for a couple of tow trips a year. |

I worry far less about engine then I worry about brakes and stability. I towed our 24ft trailer 20 miles to and from the machine shop last week. Our towing Suburban was in the body shop so I had to tow it with our 91 Buick Roadmaster SW. The Roadie Toadie has gobs of power. That trailer pushed that car in ways that left me in a cold sweat. The trailer was empty. We dont even have a hitch on the Valiant...it would be suicide. A 528" Hemi wont cure 1/2ton brakes and suspension. If you live in the flatlands dont worry on the slant. IMHO you might be better towing the truck with the Coronet. |

I agree with the gang here. My Clark Cortez motorhome is powered by a slant 6. It weighs about 5 tons. I also pull a 17' boat sometimes with it. It has a 4 speed manual transmission, and on a steep incline I'll be going about 25-35 mph in second gear. The engine can take it, it's the rest of the car i'd be worried about. If you've got your heart set on towing with your car. I would spend my money on brakes and suspension before putting in another engine. I would also look at changes that will ad more torque instead of HP. Moose |

I have towed a 22 foot 350 inboard boat from Fairbanks to Valdez (approx 360 miles one way, and a few 4 mile 8% grades in between) and back with my (then) bone stock '87 D150, 225 auto, 2.76 rear gears She never complained once, and never had any problems, but was definitely no speed demon. The boat trailer had dynamic/inertia brakes, and those I am sure helped quite a bit in the braking department. Hills were a slow climb in second gear at about 35-40 mph. I also used to work for a U-Haul dealer, and towed every trailer they rent with my slant. Mostly unloaded, but some loaded auto-trailers and 6x12 enclosed trailers. These all also have inertia brakes. Again, no problems. The slant will handle it, but you will not be very fast, and trailer brakes (either electric or inertial) are almost mandatory IMO. -S/6 |

If I were you, I go ahead and swap in 318 4-barrel if you plan to do any towing regularly. My D-150 could'nt pull a greasy string out of a cats ass even when it was brand new. It is even worse now. I will probably be swapping it out for a 318. |

For years I towed a Dodge Dart race car with a '64 Valiant Station Wagon; first with a worn 170, and then a 225. The important thing was an upgrade of the suspension and brakes. The engine worked fine. I towed from Northern California to Riverside Raceway, about once or twice a month, a trip of over 700 miles each way, and over the "Grape Vine". I did this for over three years. I also towed to other tracks in Southern California, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington. |

Go to the social Corner, the post is titled "slant 6 pulls the load" slant cecil and I both posted stuff on towing with the slant.. like most people here have said brakes and suspension are the first concerns, after that I would say gearing.. my truck has 4.10 gears 33 inch tires and a granny 4 speed.. itll tow the world, but its also has 3/4 ton susp. and brakes... good luck, Take it easy and you'llbe fine, Dan

i could alway get my dads van from him and put the extra 400 i got in it would give me a dry place to sleep to boot but maybe i'll do that later right now i want my truck to get together |

My father and I pulled a 12000 pound 30' boat from the Michigan to the lower chesapeake bay in 24 hours over moutians of Pa. with only one problem.........I could do 60mph up the hills! I think your slant will do fine. |
