Post subject:  NAPA is on CRACK!!!

Ok Everyone,

I am really getting tired of the B$ with NAPA in this area (Portland, Or). I have called 4 different NAPA stores looking for the magic "Crank + Bearings" Kit people have mentioned on /6.org. NAPA says there is NO SUCH THING, and in fact says that they don't have a Crank for the /6 @ all for ANY year. :x Now I KNOW this is BS, but they tell me unless I have a part number then to @#( off  . Does ANYONE have the part number(s) associated with the crank + bearing kit? does anyone have the Crank P/N itself?

Any information Greatly appreciated... I am getting tired of being shined on by these Jerks  . If somebody has a better idea for getting a matched crank and bearings without going to hell to get them then I'm all ears

Post subject:  Call Woodburn....

Call Napa "Davison Auto Parts" in Woodburn on Monday and ask to talk to Craig Jensen, he's had to order two of these already for other hi-po slant six rebuilds he's machined already, so he knows what a 'Crank Kit' is...

Napa gets their kits from another source, and they can't get a price on Friday's....

'Schucks' lists one at $156.88 + $57.90 core

"OE Forging #2843935; 3769307; With 1 3/16" Rod Journal Width; Steel Crank; Includes Engine Bearings "

When in doubt, go to the competitor....

I just got "jacked-around by my local NAPA store on a "short block" for a 60-67 (small crank hub) 225 SL6

The first "counter man" (kid) said they did not carry remanufactured short blocks, then I pointed out the " Remanufactured Engines Sold Here" sign in their window and the kid started punching-up stuff on his computer and asking me questions like "what is a Dodge Dart" :x

I asked to see his manager and that guy said he would call around, get some prices and call me back. Later he called back with a $1000+ price for a short block, I told him he was high. He said he could come down to $967.00 and throw-in a gasket set.

I bought the short block I needed from Kragens for $570.00 + a $100.00 refundable "core charge". The gasket set was an extra $39.00

It pays to shop around.

Post subject:  sl6 rebuilt short blocks and long blocks comment

hello sl6 sages- the doctor is pretty much on point here. backin nov. 93 i put a rebuilt long block into my 77aspen wagon. it ran well for 10 years and is still running except the car frame and body rusted so badly that one day i went outside in nov. 03 and all that was left was a 4 inch rust flake- no car!! but there was theengine and everything else in perfect running order. in those ten years i put over 100k miles on it and the only thing i had to follow up with was a valve adjustment for which i followed the article on same in the old sl6 news mag. got everything right the 1st time. never put a quart of oil in between changes(3500miles). now here is the point. the rebuilt long block cost $893 at pep boys which got its rebuilds from recon inphiladelphia. ironically the refunded core charge was $225. had to laugh at that. giventhe doctors cost of $570 for theshort block, prices havent changed a lot in 11years. been sitting at a friends in nj until i can find a use for the good engine , parts, etc. or find a welder who can strengthen the body without me needing to take out a mortgage. cant remember the name of the fellow who wrote the valve adjust article in the old mag. had b+w pictures too. thinkhe wasa colleague of poehlers in oregon. the doctor would know. what does a rebuilt long block from a jobber go for now. cant be muchmore than $893. regards paladin

sounds like there some differing ideas on the board over these rebuilt short and long blocks and their quality. im gonna need a rebuild pretty soon so its something i might should look into. is a short block worth it if my only mods were gonna be to the cam, head, intake and exhaust. i know itd save me time and some work but how much more expensive is it than doing a rebuild yourself?

Post subject:  rebuilds

the store rebuilds are fine for stockers, and fine for a little fun stuff added (exhaust, cam, intake) but these motors have none of the special stuff done like porting, drilling out the oil passages, die grinding off slag for oil drainback, etc. Plus, many of the parts are the cheapest that the rebuilder`s can use, like internal parts made from Mexico. And no love put into how the bores are hatched, how the bearings are put in. In other words, no special attention to detail, which is important when getting extra extra power from small cubes, or any motor for that matter...

You could flog the crap out of a store rebuild, but don`t expect miracles in longevity when doing so... but if you are up for it, i`d drop one in, put your stuff on, add a 100hp shot of NOX and see how long it lasts. It would still be fun

and, i DO think the stores `crank kits` are quality, as long as you get some good bearings in there. assembly and choice of ALL parts are key issues for me

I am only getting a bottom end kit for right now. I am going to order the Crank kit for now, and I am going to get the highest quality one available. I have a 2nd engine which will become the basis for the performance modifications that I intend to do. When I get it hand rebuilt I am going to super-6 it and give it about 75 HP of spray. Until then the rebuilt crank-n-bearings will have to do

Be careful! I went through at least 4 NAPA crank kits for a 360, before I found one that was only bent "a little bit," so that I could regrind the freshly ground crank and make it straight. Major PITA, because the machine shop I entrusted to regrind the crank(A&W), while they did grind it straight, ground it too small! So then I had to buy special bearings from back East.

I can't let a post about crankshafts from Portland, OR go by without mentioning "Crank City". I think just about every machine shop in Portland send their cranks there. When I brought my steel 340 crank in, the guy there looks at it and says 340 Mopar before I open my mouth. I love working with people who know their business. He told me $25 for a polish or $60 for a turn then polish. He tried to polish out my rusty but unturned crank, and when it came out .0003 undersize he called me, asked what to do and then turned it .010 and polished the crank. He only charged me $60 so he didn't charge me for the first polish. If you have or can get a core crank, take it to them. Just my $.02. Mark

is CRANK CITY a shop? I did a search and came up with nothing. Do you have an address or phone number for them? Any information would be useful :)

Hmm, maybe the real name is different. They are downtown Portland, but I cant remember the address. I will ask Steve at North American Muscle Cars tomorrow and get you a number and address. He turned me onto them. NAMC is all mopar and in Portland so you could give Steve a call. He's at 503 775 5012. Hope that helps, Mark

Post subject:  RE: Crank City

I really appreciate ANY information that I get :)

I would love to find out the name of the place, and an address would make my week! I called the fella that DI suggested in Woodburn and he's REALLY cool. Their machine shop prices are pretty fair... so worst case I'd just go there with the parts. In any case I'd still like to get the 411 on the crank city place since they'd be only 5 miles away rather than 40

Thanks again
