 Post subject: Cam and crank timing

Hello, i bought a new cam and i put it in, but I can't figuer out how to line up the cam timing with the crank timing. the gear that goes on the cam has an arrow on it, and the gear on the crank has 4 little letters, and a small circle, i am not sure if thes are the two you line up and how. I've looked at the timeing chain and there are no marks.

You probably line up the arrow with the dot (small circle). What cam is it?
Did it come with paperwork? How about the web site? The manufacturer can answer that question better than I.

If i had to line up the dot with the mark in the cam gear, how accurate could it be? Or would I need some measuring device? The cam is from Clifford Performance, They gave me a paper with information about the cam, and it briefly talks about making sure the cam is in the right place to the crank, and it's kind of confusing to understand.

First, you should know that the crank gear must go on first, so you can put it on.
Secondly, the arrow and dot should be on the close edges of the gears and line up on the center line of the crank and cam bolt. That is, if you held a straght edge ( a ruler of something similar) on the center of the crank gear and the other end on the center of the cam bolt, it should also be inline with the arrow and the dot. I suggest first putting the cam gear on without the chain, getting everything lined up, then putting on the chain(by pulling off the cam gear making sure not to turn it).
Lastly, most guys suggest that you should "degree" the cam 'cause the factory marks could be off.
