I would like to convert my 68 valiant drum brake set up to disc brakes. Does anyone know what cars i can strip brakes from and also what years will fit. I would like to keep the small bolt pattern. Will a 77 aspen brakes work? What parts do I need to strip off? Thanks for your help |

The only option if you want to keep SBP is the 11" Kelsey-Hayes 4-piston discs used on A-bodies from 65-72. The rotors and calipers can be hard to find and relatively expenive, but they are nice brakes and work well. You can use your upper and lower control arms, but need the spindles for that brake setup. I happen to have a set of spindles, rotors and calipers I can sell. I can't say if the rotors/calipers are any good at this point. You might want to check into replacement parts before you get into this. Check www.rockauto.com, and I think Master Power (mpbrakes.com) and Stainless Steel Brakes (ssbc.com) sells conversion kits and so will have replacement calipers and rotors. Lou |

The good news is that Aspen brakes will fit; the bad news is that you won't be able to keep the small bolt pattern if you use them. To install the Aspen (F-body) brakes, you'll need a set of upper control arms from a '73-'76 A-body, '66-'72 B-body, or any E-body. Get a set of '73-'76 A-body disc brake ball joints new from any parts store, and the spindles from the Aspen will bolt right on. The parts you'll need from the donor car are everything between the ball joints. Or, for really big brakes, get the hardware off a '75 or later B-body or R-body. That's things like the Chrysler Cordoba and Dodge St. Regis. It installs just like the Aspen hardware, and gives you nearly another inch of rotor diameter. Unless I'm mistaken, one of the two aftermarket disk brake conversions (either Master Power or SSBC) had both bolt patterns available. Not sure if you want to spend that kind of $$$, but if you want to keep the SBP, at least it's an option... VM |
