I am in the process of rebuilding my front end with disc brakes and the junk yard spindle and caliper brackets I got are pretty corroded. The spindle is ok but the bracket sliding surfaces are corroded to the point where I have to machine the surface. How much can I machine off before destroying the geometry? 1974 Scamp.

If you remove any material, you should use shims to correct the installation. I don't know any exact tolerance, nor do I have experience, but it's a textbook answer to your question. I can't actually say I've even heard of your problem before, although I can see your point. You wouldn't want your brakes binding.

Perhaps, see what shims you can find and machine to fit if possible. Similiar to fitting overbored pistons.

I've done that operation a bunch. I used to re-machine sliders and then have them nickel plated for wear.

I had a fixture that held the caliper adapter square in the mill and then I just took a skim cut to get the suface nice and smooth. There is a lot of slop in the factory tolerances so no problem as long as you only take 0.015 or so off.

I really recommend having the adapters plated when finished. Nickel should work the best for that application. They should last a long time once they're plated!
