hi all!
i got a question.
i go to start the car and all i get is clicking. i have done 2 alternators and 2 batteries as well as two i think they are called resistors(the silver box on the passenger fender)each time the car then starts and i go along my merry way for a few weeks. then it happens again. i took out the bulb in the dome light and checked my fuses and nothing different.
any suggestions??

sounds like either you have a short which is draining the battery over time, OR you are running on the battery `mostly` during driving.

i would check the ammeter connections on the back of the instrument panel, better yet, get rid of the ammeter connections and run the charging wire straight to the battery from the alternator with a fuse in it. the original ammeter wire feeds a wire in the harness (behind the gauges) so be sure to power that as well with a feed (fused) from the batt.

do a search for `charging system, alternator, alternator upgrade, charging, etc. on here and you`ll find info about the ammeter bypass and upgrades. it is a common problem with mopars and was a bad design everyone agrees on.

a voltmeter is a much better guage for your system if you want something to monitor charging

Tom, I agree with Thropar, that your battery probably isn't getting a charge. If you don't have a voltmeter or multimeter buy one or borrow one. Kragen auto parts (I think its them) will loan tools, so you may be able to borrow one there. Charge the battery, then check how many volts are at the battery when not running and running. It should show about 12 volts off, and 13-14 volts when running. If there is no charge, the first thing I would do is check and clean all wire connections, especially the ground, and try again. Often the solution to a charging problem is as simple as that.

I had the same situation, and what it was was the solenoid/starter was faulty and it was taking so much energy from the battery to operate it that the alt had to work at full blast to recharge the battery and it could never catch up so I was constantly recharging my battery and having electrical issues until I changed the starter.

I then went through three lifetime warranty duralast starters from autozone till I got one that worked correctly.

hey!
just wanted to let u all know that i think i was able to fix my problem. on friday i went out to look at what thropar said. just for sh@#s and giggles i took the dash apart to look at the ammeter. i touched it and it was quite warm. i just disconnected it all put in a bolt in all the eyehooks and taped it up real good.
i let it sit since and it started just fine for me today. lets see if this continues!!

i had that problem after i got a new battery and a alternator.
I took my starter out, and put it back in. and it worked fine for a while until i had to replace my starter.
