I am gathering parts for a 8.75 rear end. Are the backing plates the same for an 8.25 & 8.75? Also do they use the same brake drum and 10" braking componet? thanks...Also for an 489 pig, are they all 30 splines for the axle? because I notice a 742 had 31 splines... |

yes 10" rear drum brakes are all the same. I used 7.25 brakes on an 8.25 rear and on an 8.75. the only differences are width of the shoes. as they get newer they get wider. |

you need to double check that. 8.25 brakes are large bolt style, 8.75 are small bolt. I also believe the 8.75(A body) has an unusual offset for the 10" style brakes. So to answer your question, no they are not the same. you can use 7.25 backing plates & drill out the extra mounting hole. Good luck |

the 5th hole was already in the 7.25 backing plates I swapped to an 8.25. I know the wheel cylinders and hardware are the same. VDART is correct on the bolt pattern for the drums(which you could just have redrilled). good luck, I never liked having to mix and match parts to make something like a rear work. |

thanks for the answers...I know about the different size of bolt pattern, I am planning on 4.5" bolt circle axles and drums...I was concern about the backing plate itself and the brake hardware, such as shoes and spring... |

If your 8.75" axle used the 10x2 1/2" brake shoes then the backing plate is interchangeable with 8.25" axle. This is also true for the 9.25" and the 7.25" axles. |

Kesteb; I haven't acquired an axle yet, planning on a 4.5 bolt circle with green bearings, but have everything else....Also have a 8.25 rear end that needs to be put together, only missing axle bearings and c-clips....has a 3.55 suregrip dif, while the 489 has a 3.23 open for now...I want both to have 4.5 bolt pattern. Just a curious question; Is that 8.25 an A body rear?? I'm looking for one for a volare. Chas (abodynut) had a housing and axles earlier this year from an F body but I have had difficulty contacting him to see if he still has it. I have a 3.55 ring&pinion sitting here waiting for an 8.25 to put em into. Im near Kankakee, not real far from you. Also, the backing plates would have nothing to do with small bolt/big bolt, that would be in the drums and axles. |

Don; The 8.25 is from a 69 dart I told, I also have a 3.55 suregrip for it, all I need is the axle bearing and c clips and somehow get the pinion and ring gears mounted and adjusted to proper clearance. Since I am putting both an 8.25 and 8.75 rear together, was wondering if certain parts(brakes, drums, and backing plate) interchange. |

While I knew that they started making the 8.25 in the late '60's I didn't know that any made their way into A bodies til 73 or so. |

Don; I am sorry, I was wrong, my 8.75 was a 1969 A body rear, the 8.25 was a 1973 Duster rear...thats what happens, when you have too many parts.. |

The brakes off of a 7-1/4 will fit an 8-3/4 IF they are off of a LBP disc brake car. Small bolt 7-1/4 brakes only have 4 mounting holes and a smaller center hole. |

And, if any of you are thinking, "I'll just drill an extra hole in the small bolt 7 1/4 brake backing plate and drill out the center hole to make it fit," that won't work either. I tried that a couple of years ago. The problem is the difference in the axle flange to backing plate distance. It differs by 1/4" between the brakes, if I recall correctly.
