Post subject:  slant six timing tape

I need to adjust the valve lash on my 76 volare
I did this job once with a friend of mine who has a 79 aspen wagon.
His dampner has lines etched into it to mark each 90 degree increment so it is really easy to know exactly where to rotate the crank to set the lash on each cyl.
My volare's dampner does not have these lines in it. I was able to set the valves manually but it sure would be great to get the dampner marked like my friends. I figure a roll of timing tape would help me in this regard but I havent had much luck finding any.

Anyone know who makes timing tape for a slant six?
I have only been able to locate small and big block tape so far

The never offered a timing tape for the SL6, the fan belt groove leaves no room to apply the tape.
All you can do is measure punch some marks every 120 degrees. (corrected, not enough coffee when I did this post)

UMMMM, shouldn't the pulley be marked every 120 degrees, for a six cyl? That is how I hve done it on my new engine.

Thanks for the help
I will just do this manually maybe using some string to measure and then score some marks.

Just FYI I did find out that the 76-77 cars have a different crank then the later ones so that the dampers arent interchangeable.

Assuming they are the same diameter, I could wrap a string around my friends and make a line where each mark falls on his.
Then I could wrap the string around my damper and mark accordingly.

Good catch about the 120 degrees vs 90. I do seem to remember 3 marks on my friend's damper not 4.

Thanks for the advice

how would you use that marks for setting lash? by rotating 120° from tdc? wich cyl do you set lash on at tdc? 1st? then on firing order? that easy? I wanna kick myself in the butt, never thought that there was such a easy way to do this.... Im foolish, moronic

Yes yes and yes

You do not need any other marks than one which is cyl 1 Tdc. when the mark is in it's place then you can check if it really is cyl 1, by trying to rotate both intake's and exhaust's valve pushrod's. If you can rotate both freely it's there, otherwise you have to rotate the engine one more round. Then you check cyl 1 lash and next you rotate engine so that cyl 2 is changing, other valve is coming up and other is going down( I do not remember which one is going down or up, but it doesn't matter). At that changing position your cyl 5 is in tdc ( you can rotate both pushrods)and you can check lash there. Next when cyl 4 is changing, you can check lash of cyl 3 and so on. Both go by firing order.

6 changing - check lash 1
2 changing - check lash 5
4 changing - check lash 3
1 changing - check lash 6
5 changing - check lash 2
3 changing - check lash 4

so my wife is rite, I really have a gift for doin' the most simple things in a twistedly complicated way   the only thing I was missing in my way of setting lashes was some vodoo involved

thanks for this simple yet great notion.
