I hate to keep bothering everyone with this. I have the cap bolt out and the spring came out with it. But I cannot see, or feel, the plunger! Shouldh't it come out, too? Ideas or suggestions?
Would a magnet, like one of those extension devices with the magnet on the end, be able to pull it out

Sorry - false alarm. I was able to use the magnet to get it out. Seems to have a little bit of a burr on the end that the spring fits into, so I'll smooth that out and put it back. Looks a little galled on one side. I'll probably just end up replacing the pump.

PS: There was quite a bit of small metal shavings that the magnet pulled out from inside the plunger. Is this normal?

Nope, shavings and burrs aren't normal. Sounds like you just found the problem. I'm with you; I'd go ahead and swap on a new pump.
