I am trying to fix the front seat in my 72 Swinger. It is badly desprung and has a huge hole in the vinyl. I am a very tall and heavy guy (6'5" & 350 lbs :shock: ) and I am really tired of this problem.

I am curious about what it would cost to get my front seat resprung with heavy duty springs, and refoamed / recovered.

Has anyone else done such a thing? If any other /6ers out there have any experience with repairing seats, what SHOULD I expect to pay from a local shop to have the work done, I have asked around but I don't know if they are trying rip me off or not. :?

I have good front and rear seats out of my 1975 Valiant if that helps. They need a new home ASAP so if anyone needs them, speak up NOW.

There is a good automotive upholstery place in St.Cloud, Minnesota, but that probably will not be of much help to you.

Good quality foam rubber for the cushion is expensive. I had my D150 truck seat redone a few years ago, they replaced only the driver position foam with some extra stiff stuff and that piece of foam cost $40. We left the old foam in in the rest of the seat because it was in better condition and I seldom have passengers. Then I had the vinyl replaced with fabric and they restuffed the back rest. I don't remember the cost. I think it was less than $200 but my family has had work done at this place for years and years and the price they ask for at the end has always been much less than what they quoted. Most places want MORE money than what they quote. I expect any quotes you get will be much higher than what I got my seat redone for. I also had them redo the seat in my 1975 Valiant back in about 1985 with new fabric and they added a 1" thick piece of foam on top of the old seat cushion.

Cost of fabric will depend on whqt you pick out.

ive read about a guy that put neon bucket seats in his dart. this might be a neat swap if you could find some cheap in a color to match your car. prolly way more comfortable than the ole bench seat. its something ive been looking into as my seats start to wear.

THanks for the offer for the 75 seats, but I found a local upholstery shop that will do a custom rebuild for $250. They will Refoam +1" of heavy duty foam, use industrial vinyl, and use some heavy duty springs. Sounded pretty good to me.

About the NEON seats. Do they just "Bolt in"? did the person you heard of doing this say anything about a specific year range? I can get access to a wrecked neon with good seats relatively cheaply, but I'd need to know what other work is involved.

Any info about that type of conversion helpful

sorry, i read about it in a magazine, readers ride section so there wasnt that much info. i cant see how it would be that hard even if you had to drill new holes. my girlfriend has a neon and ive been going to measure the height of them and see how different the level would be thatn my bench seat. havent go around to it though. sorry i cant help any more, its just an idea i had.

Not to difficult. I used Neon seats in my 65 Belevedere and had to make a base for the buckets to bolt to and then through the floor. Coat hangars are great for fabricating. The Belvedere had an irregularly shaped floor, not nice and flat. Only way to check is to pull your seat out (very easy to do), measure, and head to the junk yard and compare. The seats were very comfortable and there were lots of 'em. Seemed to me at the time, that once the Neon got into a wreck it usually ended up in the junk yard.

Swapping seats is not that hard to do. I've added a power seat rack from a big Chrysler to a stock 65 Coronet bucket seat on the driver's side of my 65 Coronet 440 convert. Used a set of leather buckets (driver's side power) for use in my 69 A108. Those were a steal at $50.00 for the pair. It used to be that 60s Darts/Valiants were termed "throw-away cars". I think Neons tend to fall in the same category now.
