I've just rebuild my first slant 6.It runs but the ammeter is reading at 10 o'clock on the discharge side.My alt. has 2 field wires, blue and green, does it matter which one goes to which connector?

No, just hook them up.

Thanks, what do you think about the ammeter reading as a discharge which ever way the field wires are hooked up .What else would cause this?

The regulator is the first thing I'd suspect. Got a voltmeter? One field wire is going to be hot (12V) with the ignition on. Hook it up and temporarily ground the other field spade on the back of the alternator... if it goes to charging like crazy, replace the regulator. If not, it's probably the alternator.

Don't forget the regulator needs to be grounded. Remove the bolts and clean the rust and paint off so it has a good ground.
Also when mine misbehaved I found the connectors inside the plug on the wire harness were stretched out. I just squeezed them down to fit tight on the regulator pins and everything worked fine agian.
