Hello all. I need some advice on which carb to use with an 83 D-150. It was originally a 1bbl on an alum. intake, and I wanted to do the "super six" conversion. I found a complete carb, intake + exhaust, breather, kickdown linkage (which i do not need 'cause I have a manual tranny) all the bolts, etc. etc. at Mopar Nationals in Columbus for a good price. I cleaned everything up, rebuilt the carb, put it together and could barely get the thing to run. Finally broke down and had a mechanic (who is well known in this area for rebuilding carbs) rebuild it and it ran good for about a day. Long story short the carb has been rebuilt 4 times and after every rebuild it will run good for about a day, then it will get to where it won't idle. Checked around the engine and the only spot I can find any vacuum leaking is around the throttle bushing and egr valve, both of which isn't too terrible. Is there any other carbs that are good to use? I have the number from the carb, is there any way I can find out if it is an actual six cyl carb? Is there a good place to get a new carb? It doesn't run too horrible with the one bbl but I tend to get aggrevated when I can't get the truck to go over 50 in 3rd gear heading into the wind :x About the only other thing I have done to the truck is put 2" exhaust from the manifold back, which brings me to another issue: is there any GOOD way to get the pipe to seal to the manifold without blowing the gasket after a week? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated, and I would also like some websites or recommendations on where to find slant six parts. Thanks!!! :D

There must be a piece of crap in the idle circuit that keeps plugging it up.
How dose the carb run off idle??

As for the exhaust gasket blowing, it sounds like the pipe flange is not flat. Many times the bolt holes get pulled up and touch before crushing the middle of the gasket. You may have to resurface or replace the flange.

Maybe your float ain't floatin' too well...
(you didn't say it had been replaced).
Take the carb apart and let the float dry out...
If it's cracked, it'll run okay for a day or so, and then it'll get saturated, and it starts loading up at idle...
Just my .02

I'll send you a pm about the exhaust later on

Thank you for your reply, sorry I didn't get back here sooner...

I am thinking that there might be something that keeps plugging it up. Off idle, it seems to run decent, although I would have thought that by putting on a two bbl I would've gained some power over the one bbl. I put a very light trailer behind it and I couldn't get the truck over 50 in 3rd gear. Not sure if this is a characteristic of this engine or not since this is the first one I have owned. I read through that book that you sent the link to, and I think I am using the wrong intake flange gasket. I will have to check and see. Also, I don't think i mentioned it earlier, but the truck was converted to electronic ignition before I got it. I have no idea if it was done correctly or not (looks kinda shady--there is a terminal block on the drivers wheel well with a bunch of fusible links I still haven't figured out what they go to!) Thank you for your advice, it is greatly appreciated!
