Hi All,
I need to identify the type of power steering pump that is in my 66 Dart. It doesn't resemble the saginaw style pumps that my later model Chrysler stuff has-it reminds me more of a Ford power steering pump. I need to put a seal kit in it and my parts guy shows 2 different style pumps. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

There were only two styles of pumps, either the saginaw (dipstick, oval filler neck) and the "other". I've seen the "other" called a few things, the Chrysler pump, the Thompson pump... there was one more I can't think of at the moment. This is the pump w/o dipstick and has a round filler neck. They aren't interchangeable because the fittings and outlets are in different spots IIRC.

There are THREE kinds of P/S pumps used on \6s. The Saginaw pump has a "rose" shaped plastic cap with a round plastic dipstick attached, and an oval neck. It was first used in 1965. The Thompson pump has a round neck and a "crowned" metal cap, usually with no dipstick. It was first used in 1960 and last used in 1966 or '67. The Federal pump has a round neck and a flatter metal cap with a flat metal dipstick attached. It was first used in 1971 or so.

The '66 Darts came with either Saginaw or Thompson pumps. Yours probably has a Thompson.

Looks like I have a thompson pump. No dipstick and a flat metal cap. Now I need to go to the parts store............

Dan, while I don't doubt there may of been more then two pumps, are you sure your descriptions are correct?

For my year car, (71 duster) autozone lists a saginaw pump (oval neck) and a chrysler pump (round neck). I have a round neck pump with no dipstick. The 71 service manual calls it a federal pump. Has a pressure relief valve in the middle of the cap, and the cap is flat. This is an aftermarket cap so it may not be 100% correct but the service manual doesn't mention a dipstick for the federal pump.

AutoZone's catalogues are not a reliable source of information as to what belongs on the car. They are, at best, a semi-reliable source of information as to what AutoZone will sell you for your car.

The pump frequently referred to as "Chrysler" is in fact properly known as the Federal pump, just like it says in your FSM.

Some of the Federal caps did not have dipsticks. By about '73, most of them did -- thanks for catching me on that.
