Post subject: | cam installation |
I am installing a cam in my truck 360. I know its not a slant but I will be doing my slant soon also. I built a 318 a few years ago, when I installed the cam I used lube on the journals and lobes. It runs fine even now. I just started to install a cam in my 360 and I did the same thing. While reading Larry Shepards book he says not to lube the journals. The cam manufacture instructions dont say not to, but they dont say to either. Could this cause a problem? Should I remove it and clean what I can off? The timing cover is not on yet. Thanks I know its long............................ |

I'd use some light oil on the journals, Larry might be warning against using something too thick that will bind the new surfaces (heat on startup=gummy race) and spin the bearing in the journal hole, which would mis-align the oil holes in the bearing. Maybe some other builders will have a better explanation or comments. |

I use either motor oil or engine assembly lube on the journals, and cam breakin lube on the lobes |

Turn the motor over with the plugs out until it builds oil pressure a couple times. That will pretty much clean the journals out. Break in lube also only goes on the face of the lifters. Lube on the sides can keep the lifters from spinning in the bores and kill a lobe very quickly. |
