the reason is I am up for some big work on the fart and bought an 8 1/4 for swapping in but i found out it only has 2.45 reduction. I am not sure if i want to go down the 3.23 route because this a daily driver and i would like it to be a real comfortable road tripper. right now ive got a super six and 904? auto and first gear shifts around 10mph and second around 25?mph. basically i would base it on what i am riding now which is a 7 1/4 but the jackass who wrenched on this before me left off the tag (such has been the case with this car) I am thinking of either keeping the current gearing and slapping a b&m kit in the tranny or doing a 3.23 swap and putting slightly larger diameter rear rubber. I don't have the experience feeling the differences and would like to get it right while the rear is sitting on the bench :D
i want comfort and good milage but i want some torque to show up all the civic dorks round here, of course. :D

I believe the stock ratio for a slant/auto combo. was 2.94 to 1. A 3.23 is a great gear...good for some grunt off the line and good freeway cruising...it dosn't add that much RPM. At least it was a good gear with my old '70 Fury with 400 BB. The 2.94 isn't to bad either. Sounds like you need to adjust your kick-down linkage to raise your shift points. Slide the rod back toward the transmission a little at a time till you raise the shift points (speed the gears change). For reference, I like mine to shift from 1st to 2nd around 20 or above, 2nd to 3rd about 30. The shift points change the further you push the pedal down of course...
A 2.45...a big block has a hard time with those.

I am leaning towards the 3.23 the more i look into it. i have adjusted the kickdown as far back as possible since the sup six swap, maybe i should weld more rod onto the end of the kickdown bracket. I have a 74 parts car for discs and it seems to have a good pull with 2.75 gearing especially because it is in really rough shape from neglect like missing screws in the carb that allow it to seperate. and even it will lay a little rubber. Hmmmmmmmm, let me consult my crystal ball....

I see it...

I see it...

It's getting clearer - you have a 2.76:1 ratio.

Seriously why don't you just jack it up and count the turns?

when i did my super six swap, the kickdown for the 2 bbl was too short to push the lever on the trans all the way back. i fixed this by putting the 1 bbl kickdown rod on the 2 bbl linkage. this allowed the lever on the trans to be pushed all the way back and its adjustable without getting under the car.

just swapped the one barrel bar back in modified with a slight bend, great idea, i had assumed that it would'nt work and had'nt the time to try yet. thanks for the advise and thanks everyone for the gearing suggestions, i think i will go the 3.23 route (if the junkyard gods are on my side).

If your kick down is going the limit of its travel, and the shifts are still too low, take down the pan, and tighten the line pressure adjustment screw a turn. Read in your shop manual how to do it. This will raise the shift points, and make them shift a little firmer as well. You may need to experiment a little to find the best adjustment for this. While you are at it, adjust the bands as well. You can read about that in the manual too.

I am running the 2.45s behind a 4 speed in my '65. I have problems starting out on really steep hills. Normal dirving is just fine. I am basically just idling around town in fourth. You will love the effortless 80+ on the freeways...

You probably do have 2:76's - at least my 68' 7-1/4 has that gearing and its a slant6/904 car.

I had simular problem, someone removed the tag from my 7-1/4 before I got the car.

I jacked it up the other day and took the back cover off the rearend. Gear ratio is stamped on the edge of the ring-gear.
turns out its a 2:76
I'd like to change mine to 3:23's also. Its would be a better gear for grunt and for hiway driving.

Hmmm, my experience has been just the opposite, or so it seems. I usually have to readjust for more throttle pressure after I bump the line pressure up.

2.76 it is, finally pulled that thing. gears are pretty good but it all looks original. after two long days in the bone yard i decided to go with around a 3.00 (probably a 2.95). posi was impossible to find there so i did'nt think it was worthit to spring for a new one yet. right now we live in the city and this car is a daily commuter so i am keeping it simple and cheap. the 8 1/4 is painted, rebuilt and ready to go. thanks for all the advise
