Exactly how much of a difference is there between the hydraulic cams of the 80's and the solid dual pattern cam of 71-77 in terms of power and torque. I assume the hydraulic cams were much milder than the solid ones. |

It's not completely accurate to compare solid to hydraulic cams directly just going by the numbers, but the '71-'80 stock solid lifter cam (actually a single-pattern unit) definitely had more advertised duration than the '81-up hydraulic cam. '71-'80: 244° / 244°, about 0.414" lift. '81-up: Don't have specs in front of me, pretty sure it was around 228° |

One thing you have to remember about advertised duration on a solid cam, some of the duration is eaten up by valve lash. (Lift too) That is the main reason that most cam grinders go by duration@.050" now. It is a much more accurate measure of the camshaft.
