Post subject:  Oil pump pressure relief valve

Where is it located, again? Someone said it is a square headed bolt that points down and towards the front of the block. Can I get to it through the K-frame, or do I have to take the passenger side motor mount through bolt off and pull the engine up? Can anyone post a picture or drawing of where it is located? Going to take it out, clean it up and hope that my oil pressure comes back.

Thanks very much, everyone.

Here's a photo cadged from the oil pump gear failure article on this site. I've drawn green arrows to the cap plug behind which is the pressure relief valve and spring.

Post subject:  Location of pressure relief valve

Dan - Thanks very much. Just what I needed. I'm assuming I can get to it from underneath, through the K-frame. I know that it is pumping oil up into the oil filter - I took it off and turned the engine over and oil came up around the threaded portion that the oil filter screws onto. So, hopefully, the pump is working and it's just the pressure relief valve that's plugged/dirty. Thanks very much.

No problem. You may want to get some fine-grade crocus cloth at the hardware store (don't substitute any other kind of sandpaper or other abrasive, only use crocus cloth). You can cut/tear a strip of this and use it to carefully polish the sides of the relief valve plunger, in case a burr is causing it to hang in the bore.

Dan, thanks. That's a great hint. Gotta go to Home Depot today anyway.

Thanks, again.

I'm planning on cleaning mine today but I was wondering; will my car drain all it's oil when removing this valve from the pump?
